Description Slut.

Just a phase.

She’s looking for attention.

It’s curiosity.

To those that say words don’t hurt

They hurt, more than any bruise

Because they damage the heart.

To those who tell us to speak up

Who forget that we’re still gagged

Not by fraying rope or worn tape

But by cruelty and whispers and chains of paper rules.

To those who tell us the world’s changed

That all those people are ready for us

Ready for us to break free from our gags

Like a butterfly from its chrysalis

And fly on our rainbow wings.

They’re wrong.

We live in a circus world

A world of strong men

A world of lion tamers

A world of clowns

A world of dancers

But what about the freaks?

Yes, we’re still here

Standing in our dusty corners

While the world watches in hypocritical wonder

Their lips say that they don’t judge

But secretly they whisper

About the bearded lady

About the dog with two heads

It’s all made up, all an act

And

They’re different than us

We don’t understand.

And the circus freaks stand in their cages

Saying we were born this way

This is who I am

You accept the clowns

And the lion tamers

And the strong men too.

So why not us?

But the crowds ignore our pleas

Whispering and pointing when

They think we can’t see.

Forgetting that the freak

Might be in the room with them

Hiding in shadows

Pretending to be just another face.

And on the inside we’re screaming

Cradling hearts of glass

And trying to fix the cracks

With bandaids and scotch tape

That just won’t stick.

We go to sleep every night

Wondering if we wake up

Will this nightmare be over?

Or will we still be stuck

In this world of shadows and cobwebs

Of closets and patched circus tents?

A world where pieces of paper

And shackles of words

Keep us bound and gagged?

Because it’s not a phase if it lasts forever

It’s not a choice to enter a world full of hate

I’m not looking for attention if I stay silent

And does anyone ever choose to be a freak?

I didn’t.

Will there ever be a day

When we can break free from the words that bind us

Like a chrysalis holding a butterfly too tightly?

When we can climb into the sun

Rainbow wings paper-thin and easy to tear

Shriveled and useless because we never learned to fly?

And will we see the others soaring high above

And join them

In flight.

Society doesn't have to understand, as long as we freaks have each other.

We 'freaks' are people too and we want to be seen as such. The world doesn't have like us but only to accept us.

This work is very touching and well-written. Thanks for sharing it with us... Society is very hypocritical sometimes, isn't it?

Yes, society can be quite hypocritical. Although we live in a rather accepting society, people can still be quite cruel and narrow-minded.

Thank you!
