Description I wanted to try out a new style. I'm usually a tight painter that enjoys having tons of detail. I've never been good at creating brushy pieces or using exaggerated colors. I decided to practice with Dovian, cuz he makes everything more interesting for me.
He looks a bit younger. This will probably be used for the prequel storyline.

Dovian and all characters belong to me: Audra Crebs

I really like this style! I have seen a lot of art in this style and I always think it looks so cool! I like your a lot too! I think you did really good with the color choices and Dovian looks really good.

thanks! I really enjoyed it, was a lot of fun and a relatively quick job, too. I will definitely be doing this with the other characters! Wish i didn't have to work tomorrow cuz I can't wait to try out Aria with all the electric blues.

OOOHHHHH!!!! The Aria one will sounds awesome!!!! Can't wait till you do it so I can see it lol! So how did you do this style? Did you just add in some "swatches" in the background a blend a little? Then do Dovian on top with adding in a few colors?

ARRedington In reply to spoofy36 [2013-04-19 17:02:17 +0000 UTC]

I have brushes that have a painterly effect/look. I used large sized brushes and threw a bunch of colors on top of eachother and added layers on top in photoshop. So the background was like 2 layers, then i just added layer after layer for his portrait. 1 for undertones, another for most of textured brushes, and another for detail, same with the hair. then, if i wanted brighter colors to show through i'd either put them on top or underneath those layers. lol make sense? it was kind of trial and error. being able to use lots of layers really helps to create certain effects.

spoofy36 In reply to ARRedington [2013-04-20 06:16:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh yea that makes sense. Layers are pretty awesome lol! I use them all the time in illustrator and sometimes when I fix up some of my photos.

yeah, you can never have too many and if you feel like you do, you can always merge them once your comfortable with the outcome of the new effect.

spoofy36 In reply to ARRedington [2013-04-20 06:32:39 +0000 UTC]

YEA!! I had a school project that had over a 100 layers! I didn't merge it though so the file was huge lol! I ended up making a second file that I merged all the layers cuz the computers wouldn't open it cuz it was so big!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ARRedington In reply to spoofy36 [2013-04-20 06:34:15 +0000 UTC]

omg i cant imagine how big that file was lol. my tomb raider file wasn't even 10 layers and that thing took a while to open and load... it was huge with high dpi though.

spoofy36 In reply to ARRedington [2013-04-23 02:38:53 +0000 UTC]

it sucked it crashed a few times! And my computer couldn't open it unless it was the only thing open! Glad I dont have to deal with that one again unless I decide to fix somethings and keep in my portfolio.

ARRedington In reply to spoofy36 [2013-04-23 14:37:57 +0000 UTC]

hmmm maybe compressing/merging some of the files will help. that sucks! But you know, my illustrator is glitchy. I can't have it and Photoshop open for long before it crashes or locks up the computer. Infuriating when I'm trying to integrate styles.

Yea my computer never lets me have both photoshop and illustrator up at the same time. Unless I want my computer to freeze up and act like shit.

Photoshop is so nice. This probably would have taken me a week to paint traditionally at least because of all the layers of colors... you'd have to wait for the paint to dry! I love Photoshop!

i've run into the wet paint problem! argh!! painted a blue background and attempted to layer a portrait on top... made a muddy mess lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ARRedington In reply to stipend [2013-04-17 23:30:54 +0000 UTC]

i hate that! have you ever tried spraying hair spray or fixative? it helps the paint dry quicker. Also, if you use liquin, it helps thin out the paints and also helps it dry quicker. you probably already know that though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stipend In reply to ARRedington [2013-04-19 23:59:18 +0000 UTC]

no i didn't know that thank you! i saw liquin, but didn't know what was for (shall get some) and i have plenty of fixative to use

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ARRedington In reply to stipend [2013-04-20 00:07:25 +0000 UTC]

no prob. I love liquin!
* another tip... if you are really good at values and like to create black and white paintings, you can really thin out your oils with liquin and do a color glaze over your black and white painting. Your values are already there so you're just placing a transparent color over the top!

nice! another great tip did you learn most of your tips at rmcad?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ARRedington In reply to stipend [2013-04-20 00:24:34 +0000 UTC]

yeah, anything I learned about oil paints I learned in school. Photoshop was self taught but once you know about color theory and the way paint works, you can pretty much deal with any medium with practice.
I've also taught a few art classes and you kind of learn more when you try to teach others!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stipend In reply to ARRedington [2013-04-21 02:06:17 +0000 UTC]

good, a quality education then
i learned much of photoshop myself too.
i think i'll benefit greatly by working more with oils
wow, not the first time i've heard/read teaching is a great way to learn! (and a way to get paid while learning)

looked at liquin today, didn't know what kind to get (there is original which looks like gel, then there are liquid variations?) what do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ARRedington In reply to stipend [2013-04-21 02:33:03 +0000 UTC]

i use the pinkish gel kind. Never used any that were in a liquid form. I imagine it's the same, maybe just use less.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stipend In reply to ARRedington [2013-04-21 06:11:17 +0000 UTC]

cool, i'll get the pink gel liquin (i imagine it's easier to control the gel on the palette) thanks again!
