I try to add darker and lighter parts (I usually use the same pencil, I just add different amount of pressure on it) as accurately as I can like I see on my reference photo to create a multi dimensional effect. And I use cotton sticks (q-tips) (you can also use just cotton or tissue paper) to lightly blend the darker and lighter parts together so it will look smooth.
And also because I like contrasts and because pencil drawings often look too dull and grey or too light sometimes, I slightly enhance the contrasts and brightness on a photo editing program after I've uploaded the photo on my computer. That way I can easily make the drawing look more effective. It can make alot of difference. I can recommend some free programs If you wish. I think it can be done online as well.
