Every cat my family has seen, cared for, or met has a personality all its own. Those we have known for years we know much more of – they have gained titles, reputations, and our endless love. The cat I’ve painted is “Sassy”, the diva. Sassy belongs to a family group of cats we’ve cared for since July of 1994. Her mother, a primarily white calico, had her and four other kittens July 7 of that year. Since her birth Sassy was the diva – always yearning for attention and finding anyone who could give it. She had a knack for predicting where people will be. When I tended to my garden this year, right behind the old house where she lived with her family, she always met me there. But Sassy had her share of bad habits too. She loved to chew – on anything – mostly fingers! This was painful when she was young, but age made her lose her teeth so it was a bit less traumatic. With every diva personality is that little snap of aggressiveness. It was usually directed towards her two sisters, one of which was pushed out of the family circle because of it. Sassy also disliked feral or new coming cats. She roamed the territory searching out fresh meat to terrorize…thankfully she outgrew that too. In general Sassy was one of those dream cats. She met you when you needed love, she was beautiful and kind, and ever so willing to please. Rest in peace. She died of natural causes October of this year at age 14.

How did you draw so realistic?

It's an acrylic painting actually. I studied and practiced for a long time to learn how to draw and paint realistically. Art books, drawing photos I looked at, practice practice practice! Just keep at it and you can do anything!

I once had a kitty me and my friends found he had been thrown out of a car window and was, so sick he couldn't walk. When we walked up to the poor thing he purred and purred. My kitten Angus was not to happy about the little bundle of white and grey fur but the kitty now lives fat and happy with two other kitty friends, who belong to my friend's grandmother! Seeing this kitty made me think of Icy even how the kitty holds it's self in the picture! It's amazing, how you did that!

Awww what a little survivor! It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that you saved the poor lil guy. I'm glad my painting reminds you of him, and thank you so much for sharing your story!

Sassy sounded like a wonderful cat [I dread the day I loose my own]. This piece is so detailed and beautiful. Wonderful shading and brush strokes.

...I'm inspired to paint my cat now. The tutorial you posted will help a lot with things too [Thanks!].

Yes she was fun. Full of personality! You never know when they're going to go, but you hope it's peaceful and after a long life.

Yes your kitty needs a painting! YOU CAN DO IT!

KigerwolfRD In reply to ART-fromthe-HEART [2011-09-19 03:19:57 +0000 UTC]

Aww, sounds like quite a character. ^^
So true. If anything and we have to put her down some day,
I just hope I can be there with her and strong for her.

You're right! I will try! 8D

...when I get more canvases... 3:
Then again we do have plenty of other 'canvases'.
Is wood easy to paint on you think?

ART-fromthe-HEART In reply to KigerwolfRD [2011-09-19 17:36:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's the most important thing you can do. Last year I lost my beloved black cat Vader to feline leukemia. It was terrible - he had two blood transfusions and stayed upbeat unless he was feeling sick. I loved him so much. One day he couldn't fight it anymore and I gave him his last hug. It hurt so much, to see him leave my arms alive and knowing the next time I held him he'd be gone. But if we hadn't of put him down, he would of died of anemia. We couldn't let him suffer like that. I miss my "black baby", but I'm happy knowing he spent a good loving year with us.

Okay enough sob story. Yes try painting! Wood is EXCELLENT to paint on. Half of my paintings are on wood actually. The only thing you have to do to wood is gesso it before you paint on it. It's just white primer paint to keep the wood from absorbing the color of your paints. I prefer wood over canvas really. It's less fragile. Be careful though, some wood is susceptible to splitting. The best kind for painting is birch plywood.

Aww... that's so sad, but it's good he was loved for as long as he lived. ^^
My first few cats didn't live to a year or long after. Current cat is 8 though!

That's great! I'll have to see if I have some gesso.
The wood I have for painting is like... well for lack of words, this: [link]
I'll have to sandpaper it smooth or something too probably. 8P
Not sure what kind it is either. But thanks very much! Can't wait to try now!

ART-fromthe-HEART In reply to KigerwolfRD [2011-09-23 17:36:28 +0000 UTC]

Very true. Yay for 8yr old! Those are the golden years (but they're bound to live much longer! Our oldest was 19!)

Nice log slice! If you don't have a spiffy belt sander, you can always use heavy grit sandpaper. Then use some thick gesso, let it dry,and sand it as smooth as you can. You can add more layers of gesso to get the surface super smooth. That helps fill in the grooves too.

KigerwolfRD In reply to ART-fromthe-HEART [2011-09-23 18:56:42 +0000 UTC]

I hope to keep her for at least that long.

I don't think they're very big... but I'll try to work with them.
We do have sandpaper. I should probably write all this down...
But yes, thanks again! Maybe I'll make my cat my test subject on my first one.

I hope your Sassy enjoys the last of his days. My Sassy died in 2008, and I'm still shocked that her mother (who is 18) is still alive and well. You never know when they'll go...but you can enjoy the time you have.
