Description In my journey to paint the many animals that live on our farm, I had to paint our only dog Tootsie.
In 1997, a black Lab named Midnight had a litter of puppies in my father’s woodshop. The gentle tempered lab had six beautiful puppies. We already had three dogs at the time – a miniature schnauzer named Babe, a basenji named Ninja, and a border collie named Sonny. Seeing the puppies melted our hearts though. My sister and I were allowed to choose one. The only chocolate lab of the six black puppies was Tootsie, and we went straight for her.
As a puppy, Tootsie was energetic and mild mannered. We raised her inside before giving her an outside lot and house to live in. As she got older and interacted with the other dogs, her temperament changed. Knowing little about dogs (and dog psychology), we couldn’t control her growing aggression. She would chase the cats, nip and jump, and bark and growl. The status of the pack became apparent, even though we housed the dogs separately at night. Tootsie was the powerhouse and leader. She was overweight in her prime and could push around the others. Babe was never messed with, and obedient and half-paralyzed Ninja was left alone. The obsessive, overactive Sonny got a different treatment. Tootsie didn’t like her constant running. The collie didn’t care for people, didn’t care for animals, all she wanted was to push a basketball across the grass until her legs gave out and nose was raw. Tootsie would often attack her with little warning or restraint. I was scared of Tootsie at the time – I was around 10.
We added another dog to our pack, one of Tootsie’s black lab sisters. Haley’s previous owners couldn’t keep her so we openly took her in. The timid mellow girl fit in behind Tootsie. She submitted to Tootsie’s every whim, making the chocolate lab that much more powerful. I remember one incident where Sonny was close to Haley, playing her usual game. I wasn’t far away when Tootsie attacked Sonny with all her power! They screamed and hollered and I was horrified. I was young; I couldn’t do a thing against the overweight lab! My mom came running and screaming to break the fight up. I hated and feared Toostie for a while, even though no damage was done.
I had little to do with our dogs for several years. Haley passed of a kidney infection. Sonny had a heart attack from too much exercise. Ninja went from old age, and Babe did too at the age of 18. Tootsie was left alone. I gradually began to see Tootsie in a different light. With no other dogs to dominant, her weight under control, and age slowing her movements, she changed yet again. She let cats sniff and befriend her. One cat, our berserker Louie, even began to dominate her! She submitted to his leadership. Every evening she waited by the door of her enclosure quietly so we could let her out to play. She’d pant and whine happily when the door opened. She couldn’t jump anymore due to arthritis. I made a habit of seeing and giving her attention. I even taught her manners, something she’d never been introduced to before. I couldn’t fear the gentle old girl anymore.
The one thing that lasted through her years, and what I remember the most, is her smile. She learned as a pup to greet people with a half raised snarl. She wasn’t really snarling; it was a unique Tootsie smile. As she got older, her face “got stuck like that”. Her smile would widen when she saw me about to let her out of the pen. Even as a grumpy youth I recognized that smile. The joy it gave me to see helped me rid of the fear. I hope to be greeted by that smile for several years to come. Tootsie has more cats to befriend!

I love Tootsie and her beautiful likeness after reading this.

Am I seeing raw umber on her coat?

Old dogs are awesome. I have a 10 year old black lab named Ivy. When she was young, she was much like Tootsie. Now, she is mellow and sweet and a wonderful dog. It's going to break my heart when she passes on, but like you, I enjoy every minute with her. I guess when her time comes, I will look back on those memories to help me through.

I think that many creative people love anything with fur because we are able to see into the soul of the creature, like we see the "soul" of ordinary things and are able to capture the beauty of them in our various media.

Thanks! Yes, Tootsie had a nice variation of browns. I used a lot of raw umber and burnt sienna.

I hope Ivy shares many more years with you. Even if they're trouble in the beginning they always seem to grow on us.

An amazing painting! The fur must have taken you a long time.

Wow... What a story! It was very intense to read this.
Living in a house with so many animals must have been very thrilling.
I have two dogs now, two terrier mixes. The female, Leni, was a playful puppy in the beginning, but after a short fight with a dachshund, she became aggressive towards all other dogs. When she growled at us, too, we decided to inform ourselves a lot about dogs. We learned how to be calm, but assertive pack leaders, and now we can live peacefully together. We even could adopt Tony, our second dog. Although Leni sometimes growls at him, she respects us and immediately stops doing it when we appear.
Our cat has to live upstairs, though, because the dogs' prey drive is just too big.
Leni smiles at us, too, when we get home. She grins and shows all her front teeth, while wagging her tail powerfully. It's so funny to look at!

The story of your Border collie made me quite sad. It's such an energetic breed that needs to herd sheep. There's no other exercise that could replace this. Your dog found a task to invest her spare energy in, which was the ball, but the way she played with it wasn't healthy.

Thank you! Nah, it didn't take too long. I love painting fur so much I can do it quick!

Nice job with Leni! I'm sure if I was old enough to know "dog language" around Tootsie, I could've controlled her aggressiveness when she was younger. But what can you do, hindsight is 20/20 (and Ceasar Milan wasn't around then!) I'm glad you got control of her and was able to get another furbaby! Poor kitty though, atleast she has her upstairs domain. Awww, I love it when dogs smile! They can sometimes look mean but if you know them you know it's for show.

Yeah, poor Sonny. We had a lot of goats at the time, but we couldn't have her trying to herd them. We also had two llamas that protected the goats with a passion, and anything like a dog would send them stomping. The ball was all we could provide. We didn't know at the time that they were such high energy dogs! Even though she was obsessive she seemed happy. As long as she had her ball the world wasn't a problem.

Cesar Millan is my hero. He impresses me because he truly knows about the nature of dogs. It was exactly the right thing for us. We are so happy with our dogs now.

Luckily, our cat Phoebe can go outside via a tree branch and the dogs can't climb the stairs. Sometimes she does come down, though (mostly to complain about the food ) and stand on top of the cupboard. When the dogs see her, they get really wild. Our old Tony is usually very calm and tender, but when he sees the cat, he starts to scream loudly and wants to attack her. We have to stay calm then, so that we keep control because otherwise Leni would attack him. Luckily, Tony is hard of hearing and doesn't always notice the cat, and Leni is easy to control, anyway.

Wow, you must have shared your life with a lot of pets so far! Do you live on the countryside?

Me too! Cesar Milan rocks! Well, if I had dogs to work his tricks on, but it works for cats too.

Phoebe is a smart cat! If she climbs outside via a tree branch, has anything ever climbed in other than her? I'd be afraid a squirrel would find its way in! That's strange how they go ballistic from seeing Phoebe. They just don't like cats I guess.

Oh yes, a LOT of pets. I live in the boony-lands of North Carolina on a 32 acre farm (which is now 128 acres, but those extra acres are woods and old fields). At the most, we've had over 170 pets. That was with a herd of 40 +/- goats, huge flock of chickens and other fowl, cats, goats, pigs, llamas, dogs, horses...those were the good ol' days.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rieke-b In reply to ART-fromthe-HEART [2011-12-08 12:39:39 +0000 UTC]

That's true! We also taught Phoebe to wait and sit down before she gets her food, just like the dogs. It's a great thing we learned from Cesar.

I'm glad she's still able to climb that branch, since she's already 11... There aren't many squirrels around where I live, but I guess they wouldn't want to come in here. I've never thought about that before. Not long ago, there was a cute little rat in our tree, though.

So many pets!! That's amazing! Even pigs and llamas! I guess you could tell a lot of stories about them.
I can talk about pets for hours, even though we only had a few rodents, 2 rabbits, 2 cats and 2 dogs so far. I'd love to keep chickens, but we don't have the space at home.

Good kitty-puppy! LOL. We have a cat, named Poomba (who really looks like a grey furry pig with a mustache), who sits patiently and begs at the dinner table for scraps. He loves any kind of meat and cheese. He's so squishy, you can carry him anywhere and do anything with him. Although he occasionally farts on you LOL

Phoebe is aging gracefully then! I think she's in it for the long haul. My oldest cat was 19, and she was so active she walked circuits around the property! And walked to creeks and ponds just to play with the water...granted she had terrible Alzheimers, which made her revert to kittenhood, but we've never had an aging cat get so active. Her only surviving daughter is 17 and all she wants to do is sleep in bed and eat. X3 Sounds like Phoebe wouldn't let a squirrel in her domain. I'm sure she chases any away if they happen to get near. Aww, you saw a flying squirrel! I love those guys, so cute

^^' Yeah it was a real zoo back then! I have so many stories it ain't funny! Some are really funny! Like one time my parents had to trim one of the 4 pot-bellied pigs feet where they'd overgrown. This pig was 400 lbs by the way, her name was Susie Q. So my mom caught her in the pasture and forced her to her side so she could lay on her. Mom had to sit on her and hold her legs - my mom's just 200 lbs and there really wasn't another way to handle her. Meanwhile Dad has the giant sheers for cutting her hooves standing beside her. Susie starts SQUEALING like bloody murder even before the sheers get near her. After trimming a couple toes, they hear this grunting getting louder over Susie's screams. Dad looks, and it's Susie's sister Barbie Q! She's barreling down the pasture like no tomorrow (she was also 400 lbs) straight for Dad! So he goes running for the barn, screaming, as fast as he can while Barbie chases him. Mom was laughing so hard she nearly peed herself. X3 I was inside at the time that happened, but the story is classic! Ah, good times.

You've had a good amount of pets too! Pets in moderation I'm sure you'll get chickens someday, they make amazing pets. Although none of our chickens are tame (well, one was, but that's because we had to help her eat because she was deformed), you can easily tame a chicken to act like a dog.

Who couldn't love that smile? That is truly a Happy dog smile if I ever saw one.
Very interesting story also, sad about the others though.Sonny sounded like a great dog! Reminds me of one I used to know as a child.
The one thing about dog's most people don't understand is that you can not fear them. They can sense such things as fear, and will use that against you.
This is really a great piece of art,I just love all of the detail and that smile! That is simply perfection captured on canvas my friend, pure perfection!

ART-fromthe-HEART In reply to DARGON1 [2010-03-23 05:16:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and what a smile it seems when she's running at you full tilt! LOL. She can't run anymore but she used to.

Yeah, poor Sonny. All she wanted was the ball but Tootsie didn't like her obsessiveness. She was really sweet though. We just couldn't find a great outlet for her energy (as a human family, we're low energy anyway.) And Ninja, funny story, she used to be a normal dog and was housed with Sonny because they got along. One day, Sonny got upset and bit her square on the back. It paralyzed Ninja's back end and half paralyzed her. Instead of making her legs limp though, it made them stiff as a board. Ninja could still walk by hopping on her stiff back legs. She could also outswim every dog we had!

I know a lot of dog psychology now (thank you Ceasar Milon!) and I've learned to keep fear at bay. Also, it's hard to be scared of an old dog.

THANK YOU!

LOL!!! I could imagine! A friend of mine used to have ST.Bernards and one in particular use to love to run at me Full tilt, jump up and hit my shoulders square with Her Giant Paws! This would always knock me off my feet,as she weighed in at around 125,130lbp.Missy was Her name, and she was the most loving dog I had ever known up to that time.Always happy to see me,and always ready to play. And it you did not play with Her....then She would play with you! She would grab my arm as if I were Her child and drag me around the yard until I played with Her!

That's really sad Ninja got hurt like that, glad to hear she was able to walk still.
LOL!!! Ceasar Milon....He has done a lot to help people understand about dogs,I will give him that!
I was just taught to never fear Any animal, but rather to respect them. They have there way's of communicating what they feel, and it is up to us to understand what that way is.
When I was about 4-5 my parents had a dog,a German shepherd.I acted the fool and teased him TOO much with one of his toys,so he Bit my head.My Mother came out and saw the dog with my head in it's mouth...(much like a Lion trainer!)
And freaked! My Father simply said "You did not respect the animal,so he taught you a lesson!" I was not hurt, but my mother made him get rid of the dog all the same.Sad,I missed that dog.

You are so very welcome!!
And thank you!! I noticed my name in your signature amongst your friends, that really warmed my heart!

I love Labs! This is such a great painting to go with the story you told, it makes me miss my friend
and wish I had another furry body to cuddle with.

When I was about 7 we got a yellow Labrador puppy that I named Mustard, the friendliest and most intuitive dog I've ever known. She let my mom's daycare kids pull her ears and tail or crawl all over her, and if you were sad or frustrated she'd find you and then just lean her warm self against you. We had her until she was a month shy of her 11th birthday.

She ended up with awful arthritis, and the pills the vet gave us made previously unknown liver and kidney problems worsen a hundredfold about two months after she started taking them. Within one week she was almost immobile, lost 8 pounds, couldn't keep anything down and was basically dying of the poison in her blood due to organ failure, and starvation. (Bloodwork also showed traces of cancer.) It was heartbreaking to hear all this from our vet, but I trusted her opinion and after talking with the rest of the family, I made an appointment to have her euthanized. It still hurts now, almost 4 years have passed, but I know it was the kindest thing we could have done and we were all with her in the end.

These are a couple of photos from our last evening together, a really sweet memory I'll always have. [link] [link] [link] She's also my icon, so I see her whenever I'm here on dA, which is a lot of the time!

(are you a pro photographer? Those pics are wonderful all around!) You had an amazing dog, I'm glad you have such fond memories of her. Maybe someday you'll find another special furbaby, a kindred spirit to Mustard, to keep you company. Mustard can never be replaced, her memory only enhances with time. Thanks for sharing! Brought a tear to my eye!

Aw thanks, she was a sweetie. And I'm no pro now but I certainly wasn't then, the camera did most of the work at that point.

I would love to get another dog, I think it would be a lab/collie mix if I could find one at a shelter, though right now I'm hoping to adopt a cat in the next year as they're a little easier to have when you move every 6 months with the season. My partner likes cats more than dogs, but he said if I ever feel like having children than I can get a dog instead.

Adopt from a shelter, always the best choice. You know, you can actually get a cat that acts like a dog. Some cat breeds (and specific personalities) have dog-like tendencies including following you everywhere, easy training and understanding commands, and very vocal/expressive demeanors. Out of 23 cats I have only a handful that are like that. LOL, why have kids that'll talk back eventually when you can have a dog that might talk back but you can pretend to not understand them.

I know what you mean, I worked at the local OSPCA for a year and loved seeing all the different personalities that cats come with. They're not as easily stereotyped as some people would have you believe!

There certainly are some little cat-dogs too. I once taught Molson, the overweight cat we had at the pet store [link] to shake a paw for a whiskas temptation. Customers got a huge kick out of it.

we had a 16 year old pembroke corgi/shelty called jojoe which I met when I was a year old, lol... first family dog... Passed on my 17th birthday. I was heartbroken because he passed during an overnight stay at the vet.

Before he went in, I told him that we would play with his special blue and grey ball (which he had to leave behind) when he got out...

well... yea, he never got out...

But I tossed it in after him during the burial

Right now I'm in the lives of a Cardigan corgi/canaan (lakota), a pembroke corgi/daschund (Missy), and a chihuahua/doberman (Bowser).

Lakota has hip trouble, Missy seems to be on a mission to eat everything in sight, and Bowser (which was meant to be closer to my wife) will not let me out of the room without him, lol.

It's amazing that humans and dogs (among some other choice animals) can create such bonds between the species border.

I normally use a # 1 script liner brush (the same one over and over until it breaks too!) They're a light brown sable, very silky kind. The brand doesn't make much difference I noticed. I paint every hair by hand many times in many colors to get it just right.
