Description I was originally going to wait and upload all of these together when finished, but I guess I'll just go ahead and upload them separately, so that way I have stuff to upload XD

Anyway, as some of you remember, a few months ago my friend was involved in a terrible car accident that injured her badly and killed her teenage daughter instantly.  I offered head sketches to anyone kind enough to donate to the memorial fund.

So here is one of them now, for of his red wolf character, Cinnamon

Very nice colours, I do like that you did inner ear fluff and that the colour border isn't just a solid line, makes it more real.  Fantastic work on the eyes too

Thank you!  I've been experimenting a little more with colorizing the outlines so that they aren't so much of that bold black separating the colors from the figure.  I eventually want to move towards playing around with a more painterly approach where there are no solid outlines.  Eeep- that is quite a step for me, though.  Feeling like I'm getting closer to trying that, though XD

And thanks!  My approach on eyes keeps changing- I'm always trying to find a good, solid way of doing them consistently.

You mean painting with no lines to begin with or eventually removing the lines altogether? I reckon you could do the former I kind of do the latter, all my 2d stuff starts off with outlines and then finishes off without them.  I can't do the former though XD Go you can do eet!

Well you're consistently doing a good job for each piece so I'm not sure how necessary it is to find a consistently consistent way to approach them, variety being the spice of life and art XD Though I hope you are able to develop one if that's what you want to do

Kinda somewhere inbetween- like, use a basic drawn outline as I always do for the sketch, but then build up the 'paint' over it and let the 'outline' be defined by volume and value, as opposed to just a big toon line.

LOL thanks XD  I guess as an artist, we're never happy and we're always growing and thinking we can improve upon something!

Ah yep I getcha.  I need to do more of that too, at the moment I still rely a bit much on flats to delineate things.

I think as artists we've run smack bang into a major ego problem if we ever stop thinking we can improve on something

Artaith-21 In reply to Ryivhnn [2015-09-05 20:09:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah.  I think that's pretty standard anyway for most people starting out a piece- you put down flats.  Or rough shapes or ideas of where color or shadow and light go.

LOL no kidding.  Although I have run into one of those kinds of artists before.  Here.  On Deviantart.  And all they draw is 'Animaniacs' art.

The mind boggles.

I have a habit of drawing ears really large, so that probably didn't help much.  I probably could have thickened the muzzle a bit, too, but red wolves are much more slender and lighter than gray wolves.

I was working off of a pre-existing ref sheet supplied by the client, so I'm not sure how on model the original design was.  If I was designing the character from scratch, I would have added a few more colors myself, like coppers and some black

Copper would have been fitting for the character I think

Well, I wanted to make sure I stayed true to your original ref sheet ^^

wait. Red wolfs are actually a real thing?

Artaith-21 In reply to mcaputo123187 [2015-08-29 06:04:20 +0000 UTC]

Yup, indeed they are ^^ Unfortunately, there are critically endangered, and there are like, fewer than 50 in the wild.  It's a big part of why they are so relatively unknown to many.  They were practically hunted to extinction.

Yup they are! It also doesn't help with misidentification that they're believed to have some coyote in them.

Thank you so much for the compliment!

And I appreciate your condolences as well.  My friend and her family are still struggling to come to terms with a new reality so to speak.  It's a very unfortunate part of life that tragedies happen.
