Description In case you're wondering what's up with the title, this was in fact a belated Father's Day present that I had foolishly thought I could finish in time for Father's Day. ....but I didn't realize how much time would need to go into this baby.

But yes, the Peacock-- one of the most beautiful and magnificent birds alive today!
This is done with acrylics on illustration board. I had forgotten that this type of board can't handle too much water so most of what you see is dry-brushing. Except for on the peacock's neck and a tad in the "eye feathers" and the base of the tail...which I figured out how to make two-toned I had no idea that the technique I was doing is called "glazing" I was just like: "hmm...I'll put this color down, then this color on top of it. Hmmm, I wonder what will happen if I add just a little bit of water to my brush and brush over this area. WOW I love it! Must do more!!"

I know it may look like its unfinished what with the spaces in between the tail feathers but believe me I'm done with it... Besides, in the ref picture, it was too dark to make out what should fill in those spaces. (i.e, what color, stiffness, direction, etc)

Reference: I referenced the picture out of this book called Life in the Wild [link]

Materials: HB pencil, 16.5x20 illustration board (why the odd size? It was left over from a project in one of my art classes. ), Blick acrylic paints, and water

Time: It took two hours for me to complete the lineart. Aaaannnd I've counted at least another 14 hours for painting although my Dad thinks it may have been closer to 20 hours... So at least 16 hours if not a whole day's worth.

I thinkn you should practice on blending the colors better.

Here we go!

The painting looks composed, and proportions here look well done. You mentioned that you let "eye feathers" out by purpose, and I do understand that drawing them all could have been quite a huge effort. Yet, now when the background is white, to me the lack of tail feathers is a bit too harshly visible. I get an impression like, "there is a spot light behind that birdie, and OH NO someone has plucked him!! DDDD:"

I think that black background with subtle hints of other tail feathers could have look better. Or, alternatively, painting more tail feathers so that they cover the picture like a web. ....hmmmm, to me the latter option sounds better. Anyway they idea would be that the viewer gets the impression of that we have a peacock with a whole tail and not with plucked one. I believe that the impression of plucked tail that I get comes from that the base of tail and the head are pretty dark and painted with intense colors, which imbalances the painting.

I hope that was helpful enough!

Yeah and now looking back on it, I do believe I'll go back and "finish it up proper-like" Just taking a break from it has helped me see that it does look, as you say imbalanced.

I'll experiment with adding more tail feathers like you've suggested.

Yes this is very helpful I really appreciate that you took the time to look at it. Thank you!
