Kotal Kahn, emperor of Outworld and blood enemy of Mileena, sole heir of the late Shao Kahn. For the past 5 years Kotal Kahn and Mileena have waged a bloody civil war for control of the Outworld realm.You'd think this would make Kotal Kahn a valuable ally in the war against Shinnok, but it wasn't meant to be. While Kotal Kahn opposes Shinnok, he's hates Earthrealm and everyone in it, making a true alliance impossible. I believe this was an attempt by Tobias and Boon to reiterate the Mortal Kombat kreed: just cuz they oppose the central villain doesn't always mean they're good guys.
A lot of the most well-known new fighters in this game, such as D'Vorah and Ferra/Torr, serve Kotal Kahn and his Aztec-like regime.

There's also a new type of finisher introduced in this game, though at a glance it isn't much different the fatality: the brutality. In addition to each character having 4 different brutalities, they can only use them at the end of a battle, when the enemy's health is extremely low. Brutalities are violent and extremely fast-paced, unlike the slower fatalities. Most brutalities, true to their name, involve the victim being torn apart in some way.

Before MK9, I hadn't played Mortal Kombat in almost 8 years. However, I quickly became a fan after that.
It's a pretty good game, though far from perfect, like 9. It plays much the same way as 9, with the addition of one QTE per chapter. Most of the story takes place 25 years after the events of 9, 20 years after Shinnok was sealed by Johnny Cage and Raiden within with Raiden's amulet. The first chapter is centered around Johnny Cage and his fight to precent Shinnok from taking over Earthrealm - a battle they came very close to losing when they faced the Elder God within the Jensei Chamber. Using an mysterious, green auric power that only manifests in times of great peril, Johnny was able to seal Shinnok away once more and end the invasion.
20 years later is when the story starts to get interesting. For the past 5 years Outworld has been caught in the middle of a civil war between Mileena and Kotal Kahn, the new emperor of Outworld. Also, for the first time in 20 years, Quan Chi has made his presence known. The threat of another invasion looms ominously, and many of the heroes who stopped the one led by Shao Kahn are dead and now serve Quan Chi. It's time for a new generation to step forward to save Earthrealm.
Despite the fact the trailers don't mention ANY of them, you might actually recognize several of the new characters, including Rain, Bo'Rai'Cho, Tanya (a bitter rival of Jade's), Mi Leng, and Takeda. Also, there's a new Sub-Zero in the mix.
