Description

This is the flag of the Sultanate of Firanjia.  It comes from a a world where the Black Death killed eighty percent of Europe's population, but the Middle East and North Africa only suffered the losses they did in our world.  As a result, Europe was unable to defend itself from the invading armies of the Muslims nations.  Europe was carved up into a series of Muslim emirates, with most of Italy becoming known as the Emirate of Rum.  Rum started out small and unassuming, but it quickly came to dominate it neighbors and it wasn't long before most of Western Europe was under Rum's control.  As such the sultanate was renamed Firanjia, after the Muslim term for Western Europe.

Over the next few centuries Firanjia would experience and industrial revolution  and would become home to many scientists and inventors.  Firanjia developed into something of a steampunk-esque society of many mechanical marvels.  At first these invocations were mostly peaceful; steam-powered carts, mechanical tea servers, better telescopes and things of that sort.  Soon, however, the majority of inventions became focused on warfare.  Specifically, in order to combat Firanja's longtime rival the Seljuk Empire.  However, the Seljuk's blocking off the Eastern routes cause Firanjia to look for alternate routes to Meeca, which lead them to discover the New World.

Despite its technological advances Firanjia has lagged behind in terms of individual rights.  Women's rights are completely nonexistent, factory workers have no means of negotiation, democracy is but a distant dream and the less said about the treatment of gays the better.  Yet their are glimmers of hope starting to shine.  A pair of brothers named Maajid and Faisal have penned a book encouraging the common people to rise up again the Sultan and demand better treatment.  The book is heavily suppressed, but it's beginning to gain traction.

The upper classes, meanwhile, have grown somewhat lax in the observation of Islam and are prone to throwing wine and poetry parties.  This is much to the consternation of the more observant Seljuks, who threaten to declare jihad any day now.  One things for certain, things are about to get very interesting.

The red and gold are traditional Roman colors, because Firanjia views itself as the legitimate heir of the Roman Empire.  The white crescent moon and star are to represent Islam.
