Description

This is the flag of New Stalingrad Colony.  It comes from a world in which the Soviet Union was the first nation to land on the Moon.  As a result the space race continued, but this time with Mars as the destination of choice.  Several space stations and lunar bases were constructed by both the United States and Soviet Union in preparation for the mission to Mars.  The on going Space Race between the two superpowers meant that by the present day most of the  Solar System had been thoroughly explored and colonized thanks to nuclear powered spacecraft.  Though the resources of outer space prolonged its existence, eventually the Soviet Union collapsed, just a bit later than it did in our world.

Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union on Earth, Soviet style communism continues to flourish in the former Soviet off-world colonies.  The temperament and attitude tends to vary from colony to colony.  Some took advantage of the distance from Earth and have liberalized and loosened their grip on their citizens.  Others, such as New Stalingrad, are more like North Korea on steroids.  The leaders control everything from the air their citizens breath, to the water they drink and the foods they eat.  With dead being only a trip out the airlock away, the hope of a successful rebellion tends to be a bit low.  New Moscow tends not to get along with the American colonies on Mars, and they show worrying signs of potentially preparing for war with their neighbors.

The crimson body and gold symbol represent Mars itself.  The red star stand for the Communist Party, and the black square stand for those who gave their lives during the founding of New Stalingrad.  Several of those deaths were due to deliberate flaws built into the habitats and equipment in order to see, for purposes of future missions, how the colonist would adapt and respond to different scenarios.
