Description LOTR style designs for Dwarves and Dwarven architecture, armour, weapons, gear and stuff.
I strived to follow and expand the visual identity you see in LOTR movies. Theres so few sources to drink from in the movies, so it was not an easy task, but indeed a lot of fun and learning.

You've done Weta Workshop's Dwarf aesthetic justice in your various concept artworks. Have you by the way seen Games Workshop's own Lotr Dwarf range of miniatures? They were much in the same place as you, and fleshed out a Lotr Dwarf style from scraps, though closer to historical northern European looks than to the intricately detailed Weta designs.

man I really dig these dwarf armor studies. they have a very eastern, steppe country feel to them, it works well for the dwarves, and sets them aside nicely from the more western/nothern european look of the elves and men. I like also how covered he is, he looks like he'd be damn hard to hurt.
also a really good riff on the dwarvish cannon established by the LOTR movies (and sadly not very well followed through on. so much about the dwarves in the hobbit, even their armor, was kind of an imaginative let down, more's the pity)

Man is that me or concept artists like us, who mind about coherence, style AND function, and historic reference are becoming more and more rare and underrated?
I guess this Warcraft and Manga generation are claiming their tool and making them damage in the industry. Nice to see someone who stil can enjoy a concept like this. Thanks for the comment!

Haha no it's definitely not just you. warcraft/hammer/whatever have definitely taken their toll on the world of fantasy art. a friend I went to see the hobbit with remarked to me afterward that jackson's middle earth had kind of "gone warcraft" with designs that were overblown and videogamey like thranduil riding a giant elk, azog being as big as xerxes from 300 and looking from the neck down just like a human bodybuilder, all the dwarves' unpleasantly loopy "individualized" designs, elrond's moon runes-reading cliff thingie, and fucking "goblin-new-york-city"
It's funny, I think in the intervening ten years (since the LOTR movies came out) there actually has been at least a few middle earth fan artists and would-be concept designers who, like you and me, have taken the designs and aesthetics established by the LOTR films, and run with 'em, and much of the output, for my money, is alot better and even alot closer to jackson's team's original vision of middle-earth than the shit that made it into the hobbit film. some of them are really good, drawing from historical reference and getting so much right. On the off chance that you haven't run into his work already, I'd strongly recommend checking out Merlkir [link] also Devin Manning, I dont know if his work is here on deviant, but he did a series of dwarf armor concepts in the LOTR style that blew my mind (I'm really glad I did my own dwarf concept art years before ever running into his stuff, because its been all but impossible not to atleast partially rip him off ever since)
I've never liked manga/anime either, and yeah there's been way to much of that influence in fantasy art lately, usually with elves; you get alot of (mostly female) artists cranking out loving portraits of androgynous elven pretty boys from the silmarillion in what look like illustrations to erotic slash fics (jenny dolfen comes to mind [link] though I do like her work alot, mostly for the beautiful and very "dark ages" costumery. ekukanova [link] and righon [link] are really good too)

I kinda think PJ aught to have combed the internet for designers, his LOTR movies were such a huge influence on so many creative people, and he could have had potentially a much better (visually) concieved film on his hands. it's a shame that there's still good work being produced, but what rises to the top seems so cheesy, over the top and just weird.
(sorry, this one was a rambler)

"goblin-new-york-city" hahaha that was a good one!
Man, thank you for the links they are all so talented artists! And I knew just one of them.
I have to say, me and many of my friends can't understand how can anyone look at your hobbit concepts and not choose them instantly, like PJ have to be done! Seriously, they are great!
And about this Dave Manning....well, he's decent but without a slight exaggeration, you are light years ahead of him when LOTR designs are in concern. Seriously, and again, many of my friends do agree with me.
Here's a proposal and a request:
-What do you think of us making a "corrected" version of the hobbit dwarves from the movie, just for fun
-I would be delighted to see some more dwarven stuff made by you, some LOTR style...any possibility?

well thanks a million my friend. I'm glad you liked those links, and I feel so complimented by your words.
as to your proposal, yeah I like the idea, I'm always game to draw dwarves, and I'd really like to see your take on some of the individual characters. It's funny a guy contacted me a few weeks ago who's also planning to "redo" the hobbit dwarves, only he's trying to remake the whole movie with green screens and prosthetics and stuff, drawing sounds a lot easier. I had a similar idea to yours myself a few days ago, one which I meant to tell you about; I'm going to do a weekly sketchblog, where I'll draw and post sketches based on tolkien's work and write a bit about them, it seems like a good way to keep the deviant art page alive during longer projects, submitting atleast one new piece every week, and with any luck it'll catch on, maybe start some fan discussions or encourage other artists to do something similar, these next two years will be Tolkien years after all. I posted four new pieces this week (well three new and one old) check 'em out and let me know what you think.
once again thanks man, reading that post made my day

hey Artigas, I put up some rough sketches, check em [link]
i'll work on these when i can, and probably do some more detailed full body shots for some; the way i see it theres "a-side" and "b-side" dwarves in the hobbit, and when it comes to the b-side guys, i dont plan on doing them in too much detail, as i never really thought they should be made to stand out anyway.
cant wait to see what you come up with!
