Description
Goblin Archers are a rare but important specialty in a goblinoid colony, and they enjoy some special status given their ability to kill from a distance.
The physical and mental qualities needed for one to learn how to make and operate such a complex tool like the bow and arrow are hard to find in the Goblin and specially the Orc stock, and the short and brutal lifestyle they lead do not help with learning and mastering such skills as well.
Here we see some of the strategies they created to circumvent such shortcomings.
The goblin on the far left is bending a cable backed bow, which is an ingenious way to reinforce and increase the power of the poorly made and unreliable bows that Goblins manage to put up together. They are not accurate or powerful enough to compare to bows used by other races, but they make up for it with barbed arrowheads and poison, most commonly in the form of faeces or a rotting carcass to dip the arrows into. Those sources of poison are readily available to any orc society and at no cost.
Β The goblin in the middle is wielding a high quality (to goblinoid standards) Horn Bow, carved out of whole Ibex or Antelope horns, and is the most experienced archer and leader of the party.
The last member is a rare Orc archer, an unusual individual born with enough Brains, coordination and eyesight to be trained with those more sophisticated weapons. They are always a great addition to any archerβs unit due to their enormous strength and are effectively the heavy weapon of a team. The orc depicted here is bending a great bundle bow, an effective and easy to make bow that can withstand the force an orc can generate.
The arrows are so large they look almost like javelins, and they are usually fitted with broadheads forged by goblins and employed as an anti-horse weapon.
Due to their physical limitations though, an Orc is rarely effective beyond the 200 yards mark, where they cannot single out targets well enough due to poor eyesight.
