You know the background doesn't have to be the most amazing thing you've ever done, what you have to do sometimes is work with what you can and to be honest this is pretty damn good in my eyes. *nods*

Now about the princess here Artist-squared , another thing to be clear about is how little of artwork there is of her on the DA and heck that's some quality work you did to re-capture her look down to the super tiny size of her and that massive dress she has on, lol.

Find it amazing her design with all the petals and the leaves and wood combined to form her.  She has alot of odd ends and shapes to her but like Midna it come together just incredibly and hats off to you for taking the time to do all that same detail of her dress, hair and even the face with the big O mouth on it as well. ^O^

Your very well spoken in terms of your lines but your coloring I must add is just lovely as well to look at.  Rather adore the fact a few deviants are into her eyes and making them glow and have it reflect upon the body, it makes for a very amazing effect.  Not to mention the shading opposite of the lighting.  You help her out in a way where you add the shading like on the leaves on her forehead or even around her dress as they help show the small light source and also give depth to the various shapes and size that make up her looks.

Lastly I still say the background isn't at any fault.  You can see the image itself and her expression very sad and by herself.  The tiling on the floor shows she's in a dark place and the overall veil of darkness around again shows that rather alone and to yourself look for something so pretty.  You even cast some shadow on her too so it again feels almost hopeless where is and heck all that much more reason to go and save her in the next dungeon.

So a pretty spectacular piece of work you cooked up here Artist-squared , do keep it up and don't hesitate either to keep playing around with backgrounds, trust me. ^-^
