Description Who said you're too old to color with crayons!?

TIP #1: To get extra details like the ones in the iris, start with lighter colors first, then slowly layer darker colors on top. Then use a sharp object like needle or in my case I used the tips of my scissors and scratch out layers underneath

TIP #2: The white areas in this drawing are the actual color of the paper, so if you want something to remain white, be aware that crayons can be pretty unforgiving and in some cases it's hard to remove their pigment [ notice the gray lines at the bottom of the paper where the white is, that was NOT intentional and I did everything I could to get it out and it was just not gonna happen - I hadn't had much practice with crayons since I was a kid so I had to learn the hard way with this piece :/ ] - this is the case especially dark colors, so be careful not to get shavings or accidentally use dark colors over the areas that you want to keep light. ALWAYS start lighter and work your way slowly to darker. Very important to remember this!

More crayon art: If you like this drawing, this is literally childs play compared to Don Marco's crayon art, he is THE master crayon artist and I found him through looking up crayon art in google. You won't believe your eyes!!! [link]

I don't know whether to clap my hands or shake my fist at you.

I can't believe this is done with crayons. It's truely inspiring. It gives me hope that it is possible to make really good art from simple mediums.

I've got a lot, and I do mean a lot, of practicing to do.

Thanks for the awesome tips and amazing drawing!! I'm just now getting into crayon art and I'm surprised at how the results look. The finished product doesn't show all the hair tearing out and that little "snap" when your favorite crayon breaks in half xD

Hi, just love the bright eye! I went out and bought a pack of 120 crayons couple of weeks ago. They are really quite fun who would have guessed! Thanks for the tips too. I was confused about white in the drawing so you answered that for me. I still have not been able to get a dark/bright picture but I am practicing.

Love it!! And for layering do you color it very lightly? and did you draw the eye in pencil first or did you start straight from the crayons?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

artisticalshell In reply to Draw-me-to-death [2012-02-09 23:31:51 +0000 UTC]

i started out lightly and just added layers slowly. didn't use pencil used the color apricot to start out the shape.

Agreed never too old for crayons. Not only do I like the iris detail but the fact that you explained how to do it. If I didn't have anything to do tomorrow I would more than likely go pick up some crayons and playing around like that.
