Description Weather the Storm.

Physical, Mental, and Emotional storms are representative of the turmoil and daily hassles that we experience in our lives. If we work through and 'weather the storm' (like the featured police boats, above), everything works out for the better.

We are the master's of our own destiny. What we do not achieve in our lifetime, is a result of telling ourselves that we cannot do so.

I enjoy how dark this photo is, and yet you can still see the boats and buildings. The clouds draw your eyes down, it's a great effect. Lovely work.

Dramatic weather can result in dramatic shots. You have both elements in this image. Love that touch of highlight on the two boats and foreground rocks. A very nice image overall.

May I suggest that you try straightening the horizon and see how it looks. Personally, I think it will improve the image. You may have to re-crop or clone in after the straightening.

What you reckon then Ashlyne, better or not. I think better. Now go in a edit and increase the image size to say 900 across and see what it looks like. I think it's too small at 600 across!

artisticatedivy In reply to SnapperRod [2009-07-29 01:16:07 +0000 UTC]

I did have it at 900 lol... Must have changed when I re-uploaded the edited version. I changed it back! Thank you for your help! I appreciate it!! Always lookin to better myself!

If you update the image is defaults back to 600 again. You are very welcome and that is what this place ia all about.

Sure is. I love when people give me constructive criticism. I request critiques on most of my stuff, but no one ever does it...unless I post it in a forum. lol. Thanks again.

I have given up asking for critiques via the critique option, never got one yet. Personally I think you are better asking your friends and watchers to comment constructively or actually put a comment in the Artists Comment box that you would like constructive comments.

You are on my friends list and I tend to apply positive and negative constructive comments to quite a number of images, or at least I think I do.

In fact can you do me a favour! Have a look at [link] (Old Slipway - New Bridge) and comment accordingly, I just don’t think the image looks right - and be brutal

artisticatedivy In reply to SnapperRod [2009-07-29 16:06:38 +0000 UTC]

Done^^ I don't know if it will be of much help; but just a couple personal thoughts.

Also, I appreciate the positive as much as the negative (or vice versa, lol). I try to be constructive a lot too, but I have read some nasty comments that people write after other deviants give them feedback, and I don't want to be on the recieving end of that. lol. So I usually write "just an oppinion" "personal thought" "take it or leave it" "I'm not a pro, so don't take me too seriously.." lol... to cover my ass in case people think I am being rude; which I never intend on doing.

I understand what you are saying and have seen it myself. You are in a different age group to me, but I am too thick skinned to take much notice of sarcastic comments. I, like you, tend to use words like "In my opinion....", "May I suggest....", "If it was my image I....", but normally the advice is invaluable.

yeah, when some people get stuck in their ways, or are too stubborn to appreciate the "help" they really won't take the advice anyways. I guess we have to "monitor our audience" lol.

My opinion: I really love this piece and what you tried to do here with the weather. I looked at the other shot, similar to yours. honestly, I find yours more personable - simply for the fact that there is a trace of human kind within it. It works so wonderfully with the title you have given the piece. The insanity of nature and human kinds turmoil - every day to keep getting out of bed and overcoming the obstacles before us. I also agree, the police boats help the case a lot.

Artistically:
It's a good shot but it doesn't look overly commercial, [ which i don't know if you were interested in or not? ] Why?. Alright The color palette is nice, a wide array of neutrals that works well together against the iodized rusty green color of the water. You might want to crop just a tid-bit off of the left side of the image. 6/7 pixels. not much at all to get rid of the small black dot along the edge of the shot. It makes it look like you didn't spend much time thinking about a crop. The angle is nice, positioning works. You have a good understanding of composition - but practice practice makes you better. Try lots of stuff you think will and wont work with angles and crops on top of your 'erfect' shot. you might get a masterpiece. If you haven't, you may try turning up the contrast and playing with exposure and what not with photo-shop. It might make your tones more brilliant. Also, your name; is slightly not centered in the corner. It seems trivial and small but yoo OCD people like me - its a little distracting because symmetry is more comfortable for the eye. Also, whether you go with it or not sometimes a border is an interesting thing to play with. ;]

Hops this gives you some good tips. <3 Kayla Roschelle.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your suggestions. I have altered it by cropping out that peice of rock from the left side; getting rid of my name completely, altering the contrast and exposure. I tried with the border; but it didn't really work with this one!
I am also kind of OCD when it comes to a lot of stuff; I noticed the non-centered name. lol.
Thanks again. Feel free to take a look at the newly uploaded image...
