I fail to understand why you think the mane and tail are weak points. 0.o
Those are my favorite parts of the whole image!
There really isn't much to critique. After staring at it for quite awhile, the only thing I can find is the horse's lighting. Its general tint doesn't quite fit with the background. If you'll just add some bleus and purples into the overall hue, it should be just about perfect.

working on it, but it may be a while before any photo shoots happen even if i do arrange shoots since we're still waiting for the greenest of spring to arrive. i need to find some nice champagnes, which is insanely hard

I just dodged/burnt a duplicate horse layer then messed with opacity over the original horse layer, then I added a shadows layer where I took black on low opacity and painted in the darker areas then did the same with white but for highlights.

The only thing I would work on is no hoofprints in the sand.. But other than that, drop dead wonderful!
