Individual Tutorials

ArtRage BeginnersGuide + mouse by Sirielle
-A guide for beginners who have never worked with any painting software before or are new to ArtRage, also for people who would like to try drawing with a mouse.

Autumn Serenity Tutorial by FafnirMcCloud
-My promised Tutorial using my new program Artrage 2.5. Please download for the tutorial JPG's as DA cannot load the high pixel dimensions

ArtRage Tutorial: Ice Within by Flynn-the-cat
-Because I actually took screenshots of this one as I went. Until I got carried away and forgot. Anyway, it's big enough for now.

Tutorial - Grids and Artrage by bolsterstone
-I've had a number of requests to explain how I do my portraits So here goes -- please be kind. (This is my first time doing this type of tutorial.) Now, to make matters easier, I chose a digitally done portrait because that was what I was working on at the moment. My traditional realist-styled work -- from the ink sketches to the pastels usually involve a similar technique.

Copic Colors for ArtRage by bolsterstone
-As anyone who has worked with Artrage knows, the artpen tool is one of the best imitators out there for those who want to simulate either Prismacolour, Copic or Touch markers.

Prismacolor Color Palette for ArtRage Users by bolsterstone
-Once again, we have a resource for those people who love the Artpens in Artrage (including those who want to use Artrage for anime or manga style art). This second palette I am uploading for Artrage users is for a Prismacolor-style spectrum of colours.

Crayola Style Colours for ArtRage by bolsterstone
-Something different for Artrage users - a wax crayon colour palette generated from colours scanned from crayon artwork on plain bond paper. This listing of 64 Crayola-approximated colours was done with help from my young nephew. And they should be ideal for use with the crayon tool.

Tria Color Swatch for ArtRage by bolsterstone
-One more colour swatch for Artrage. This one is a little different for a couple of reasons. First of all, there are two systems used to organize the colours.

Artrage Cloud tutorial by ruthlessmoons
-This is a tutorial I created to help people with painting clouds in Artrage 2.5+. Please note that I forgot to mention that for the examples shown I used "heavy crumbled canvas" as the paint shows up very nicely on it.

Artrage Water tutorial by ruthlessmoons
-Hello all, I have created another Artrage tutorial. This one will teach you how to create ocean water quickly and effectively (depends how much time and effort you put into it). Enjoy and ask questions if need be!

you have to export the image as either a bitmap or a j peg i think. you go to file - export image- and then i guess you'll be able to do it from there. I'm not sure which version you're usingΒ

Convert the Artrage pictures to a format it does recognize -- JPG, GIF, PNG. Β And it should work fine.

Do you have a tutorial for blending in ArtRage? I'm finding it nearly impossible.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Missleepify In reply to drawingmydream [2013-05-24 19:26:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm just trying it out myself, but it seems the Palette knife is good for blending. That or the standard picking/dropping colours with the pipette-thingy-tool technique.

I just recently got the Wacom Bamboo Splash tablet, which comes with Artrage 3.5. So far so good, except one little issue: WHERE IS THE LASSO TOOL?!? Do I even have it, or do I have to throw away another $50 for the pro version? I can't find it anywhere! Someone please help, I'm almost ready to refund this thing and get my hard-earned $80 back.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Flynn-the-cat In reply to Quasartist2 [2013-11-06 22:57:48 +0000 UTC]

Hey, just so you know:

There's an ArtRage 4 now (they collapsed the pro and the normal version back together to make it easier). It's $50, and if you want to *upgrade* your existing software, you get 50% off. The tablet has a slightly older edition because it was already packaged with the tablet (it's not that much older, AR4 came out this year). (If you had been upgrading to the Studio Pro version, you would also have gotten a discount).

As for the lasso tool, there IS one.

Find the 'Select' button; it's a dashed square on the innermost row of tools. Go to Settings for that tool and you can choose selection types. Fourth from the left is Freehand which is probably what you wanted.

Quasartist2 In reply to Flynn-the-cat [2013-11-07 06:12:23 +0000 UTC]

I got the free upgrade to version 3.5.11, but I just recently got some money and I'm trying to upgrade to 4.0, but I don't have a 50% off code even though my software is registered. Any idea on how I might get a code? I keep looking around on the site, but it keeps sending me between the same 2 pages over and over again, and neither page offers any insight, even though they both say "learn more here."Β

I've done everything you suggested, but my only options are Ellipse or Rectangle, and then Add, Subtract, or Replace.Β

I appreciate your help though, I had no idea I could get the newest update for free!Β

Flynn-the-cat In reply to Quasartist2 [2013-11-07 13:37:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, all the "between version" upgrades/patches are free. Also I was an idiot and misread something while researching, you were quite right about the Select option in Studio.

Hmm, I'm not sure, but have you actually clicked through to "buy" the software? If you do it via your membership page with the serial number registered and everything, then it should be automatically applied. (So log into Member Area> click the Upgrade to ArtRage 4 button > go to store > check for discount)

Read hereΒ forums.artrage.com/showthread.… for the official instructions. If that's not working for you, drop them an email and they'll happily help you figure it out.

Did you ever find it out?

Not having the lasso tool is killing me :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Quasartist2 In reply to AqueousSerpent [2013-09-30 06:14:03 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately not :c I'm pretty sure you have to get the Pro version to get it, which is why I've gone back to traditional-only art. Sorry I couldn't help :/Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AqueousSerpent In reply to Quasartist2 [2013-10-01 17:56:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh, shame. :/

I did find another way that's pretty much the same, but it can be time consuming and shouldn't be necessary since we should have the lasso tool anyway.

I could tell if you want, but if you have given up on digital art then there isn't really a point I guess :L

Quasartist2 In reply to AqueousSerpent [2013-10-02 07:31:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, please do tell me! I'm willing to give it another go. I just hate how inconvenient the program designers made it.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AqueousSerpent In reply to Quasartist2 [2013-10-03 17:12:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh, alright

What I do is duplicate the layer, and then on one of the layers erase everything except the part that you want to move. And then on the other layer just erase the part you are wanting to move and that is in the other layer.

Then you take the layer with the part you want to move, and you can select it all then do what you want with it.

It's kind of tedious but it's the best I have figured out to do :/

Flynn-the-cat In reply to AqueousSerpent [2013-11-06 22:59:29 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that's how I used to do it in ArtRage 2. ArtRage Studio/Studio Pro does have a "lasso" option. It's just easy to overlook (if you ARE in ArtRage 2, then sorry, no luck).

Find the 'Select' button; it's a dashed square on the innermost row of tools. Go to Settings for that tool and you can choose selection types. Fourth from the left is Freehand which is probably what you wanted.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AqueousSerpent In reply to Flynn-the-cat [2013-11-07 02:39:39 +0000 UTC]

I have ArtRage Studio

But when I go into settings for the select option there's just the type of selection: square or ellipse, and then mode: add, replace, subtract. Clear selection, inver selection, and reset. :/

In the presets option, there IS an option named Hard freehand and Soft freehand, but they dont work. It just selects in a circle like ellipse does :/

Flynn-the-cat In reply to AqueousSerpent [2013-11-07 03:08:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh drat, no, you're right. I couldn't check that version and was going off some less than informative specs. Most stuff out there is talking about the Pro version. I'm sorry!

If it helps, you can get a 50% discount to upgrade to the latest version which definitely has select options and a bunch of other stuff.Β

(artRage originally started out as 'traditional' as possible and they've basically been adding all the stuff digital artists actually need in each version).

AqueousSerpent In reply to Flynn-the-cat [2013-11-07 05:07:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'll probably upgrade or buy PS/SAI once I get money haha.

Thanks for trying to help though!

Flynn-the-cat In reply to AqueousSerpent [2013-11-07 13:39:54 +0000 UTC]

I must admit to self interest - I'm addicted to ArtRage and compulsively attempt to make other people like it as much as I do.

(btw, the upgrade discount means that the latest version would be $25 ... so it's your cheapest option!)
