Description "Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water..." Exodus 14:16

This here is my first fully digitally painted piece. I hand drew moses but painted him and created the backround fully in photoshop cs. While I'll never totally abandon traditional methods of creating art, painting digitally offers up so many great abilities. This piece also is also significant in that, while painting it, I finally picked up the gauntlet laid before me for the past several years and dedicate myself wholly to biblical illustration. I've been weaving in and out and around it these past few years but I've few obstacles or excuses left now and frankly I loathe what christian "art" has become. Biblical christianity once the subject of the Great Masters of Art is now reduced to paintings of lovely colored scenes of houses (with..maybe.. a bible verse connected to it), and eagles.. lots and lots of eagles, and the occasional "Happy Jesus" painting. Once in awhile a great piece of Art comes along but it gets lost in the endless array of knick knacks and trinkets it eventually gets turned into...thanks..I'll pass...My goal is to create art that gets people to actually open up their bible and read it...

..so unless God moves me onto something else thats what I'll be doing from here on out...lets see how I do..

I must say, I'm in total agreement! Β There's far too much smarmy Christian art out there. Β I like to think it's part of an artist's job to show things from an unexpected, hopefully thought provoking Β perspective. Β Thanks for stopping by, thanks for commenting, and nice work for a first full digital!

Ha, thanks this was many years ago now. I haven't been doing much painting because I moved on to making a comic instead.

Yeah I noted that.Β  I do hope your comic reaches people like you want it to.Β  I haven't had a chance to read it, but coming from a family that LOVES comic-con chances are really high I'll like it.

Great comments. I think you are on to something, making art to get people to open up their Bibles is a great idea. I feel that way about my writing, but I haven't decided to dedicate all my writing to the biblical themes at this point, just my first two books so far.

I agree, but unless dA changed their categories I don't think there is a "history" category to place the painting in. My only choice was "fantasy".

This is truly amazing, I just saw The Passion of the Christ and I advice anyone and evryone to go see it, I know it doesnt have much to do with this piece of art but yeah. Its one thing to say Jesus died for me and another thing to see it, it has an incredible impact and you actually realise what he did for you. You'll feel different, very different and you might jusy experience an amazing, wonderful and over whellming precence like I did. But anyway this is truly an amazing piece of art!! I love how you did this and oh yeah they found the actual place where they crossed over the Red Sea..if you want I could give you the link.....anyways yeah amazing like I said!!!

One more thing, actually, in thought of your description...

Kitsche art is basically the term you would be looking for in reference to the knick-knacky stuff that's out on mass production lines around the US that has something to do with Christianity. I don't loathe it, because it has it's place somewhere, but I don't enjoy it either. It just makes me think of the fluffy marshmallow stuff that peeps are made out of- the result of Americanized Easter. .... though I do like eating the occassional peep.
A book that you might find interesting that revolves around Christianity and Art is a book called 'Art & Soul' by Hilary Brand and Adrienne Chaplin. It's an interesting read, so far (I'm about four chapters from the end, I think).
