While vacationing in Albuquerque, my daughter played on her Granny Joy’s kitchen floor. Morning sun came through a sliver in the curtains and created a beautiful crown of light. Inspired by the ethereal scene, I took photos of her immediately. Back in Colorado, I decided to draw that special moment in my daughter’s life. To imbue meaning, I added her polka-dot ribbon, toy mirror and necklace to show her love for play; included Hitam the cat, to describe her love for animals and nature, and on her wrist, I drew a pearl bracelet - a gift from grandmother Omah in Malaysia - to portray our unconditional love for my daughter. (8/2/2012)

I learned a great deal while drawing this.

I tried to have as many elements in this drawing as I could muster. Metal from the door, Wooden floor, Gem and pearls for the bracelet, fur, flowing fabric, dark, textured rug against the light. The other factor I considered was having a dynamic drawing of a seemingly static environment. Notice the diagonals on the base of the drawing - the lines of her legs, arm, triangular shadows, diagonal light beam. I hope these elements help to move the viewer's eyes all around the drawing. The darkest and lightest areas which are on opposite sides are there for viewers to rest their eyes. I hope this makes sense...

very nice figure poses. It almost looks like the cat and the girl are staring at each other but looking at the cats feet it looks like the cats behind her. very surreal

artizd In reply to enzek-art [2009-09-20 20:20:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

If you look carefully, the cat is intrigued by the slightly open door, because there is someone behind that door- a shadow behind the curtains. The girl may or may not be aware of that shadow-- depending on how you interpret it.

Thanks for taking your time to look and comment. I appreciate it!

I love the captured essence in your work, just brilliant!

I like to draw in pastels, charcoal, and recently graphite again, I was just wondering which medium is your favorite to work with/outcome and which seems the easiest?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

artizd In reply to MohaniRose [2008-07-24 02:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much Crystal!

I think charcoal is the easiest, fastest and most expressive if I'm doing life drawing.

I'm really enjoying pastels as a way of understanding color before I eventually pursue oil. I really like the spontaneity of pastels...

My first love will always be graphite, though it's not the easiest. It's painstakingly long, at least for me, because I don't blend my work very much... and getting the darks without looking grainy is in itself a skill...

Btw- thanks for the fav on this drawing and I appreciate the watch. I will be actively drawing again mid August...

Thanks very much, May. The ref is of a photo of my daughter and several other photos and real life props drawn in to make the composition. There's no such place in existence either... I'm glad you like the lighting and shading because those were the elements I was hoping to capture in this drawing.
