Description 40" x 40"
Oil on canvas

This is my favorite rose to date. The inspiration for this piece was the rose itself! It's a multi-colored rose, and I haven't really put forth much effort in doing one before, so I'm pleased with this one. I worked somewhat more loosely than I normally do with roses, focusing more on contrast between light and dark and the colors themselves and not so much on details.

Why do I paint roses so much?
I feel that, as I draw and paint them on canvas, they're like puzzles. The petals have to fit together perfectly or the flower looks completely wrong. I think this differs from other flowers because many of them can have petals added or detracted without anyone noticing something wrong. As I paint the rose, I paint in a way that feels most natural to me, beginning in the center and radiating outward, similar to how the rose opens.

Very nice work, I can clearly see the value of working in oils when I look at pieces such as this. The soft gentle blending is perfect, and the subtle texturing on the petals is really well done. Β Just an excellent piece of work overall and a pleasure to view.

Hello! I'm making a series of art videos about flowers, and I was wondering if I could include this piece in one of my videos. It would be set to an original classical-style composition (by me) about this flower. I'll be sure to credit you and link to your page if you say yes.

Awwww! Thank you! To respond to your other comment: It just takes a lot of work and even more patience to do it. A good reference photo is a must, too. I'm currently working on a new 40" x 40" rose painting that details the steps to a finished piece, which will be posted towards the end of this month!

ART-fromthe-HEART [2011-05-15 19:27:01 +0000 UTC]

I don't see how it's painted more loosely, all I see is more detail! I follow all those sharp petal lines, it feels like a vortex and I'm being sucked in. LOL! I'm glad you paint roses! They certainly are like puzzles, unique and deserving a million paintings! So do you paint them out of your head, or do you use photo references??? This one in particular is amazing for the color changes and complexity. Keep 'em coming!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artman225 In reply to ART-fromthe-HEART [2011-05-16 01:35:11 +0000 UTC]

I think it's loose because it's bigger, and I can make larger brushstrokes. lol I've never had my roses described as a vortex before! I like it.

I always look at a reference photo when I paint these. There's no way I'd be able to paint all those details without one!

Thanks!!!!!!

I've done a few roses in my time, and this piece is exceptional. Do you use a wet on wet technique?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artman225 In reply to jfkpaint [2011-05-15 14:37:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I do use wet on wet when I paint in oils. When I'm blending the colors on the petal, I find it's easiest to do it that way.

Of all the roses you've painted, it's "my favorite rose to date" too. Nicely done. I bet it is easier to paint all those gloriuos petals in big size canvas.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artman225 In reply to milbisous [2011-05-15 14:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! It really is much easier to paint those details on a large canvas. You can use a larger brush and can be freer with your brushstrokes. It just takes a lot longer because there's more surface to cover. haha
