Amazing! did you draw those squares(cuts) by hand or did you use an effect on a regular coloring u did for it?

No, it was just good ol' Polygonal Lasso tool for that - I laid down my textures and some basic area gradients over the flats to get me started, then just layered up some loose, blocky shapes with the lasso for the highlights. The trick to it seems to be how you overlap the shapes, more than anything else.

Wow it looks amazing. I think I'm gonna try and do that on my next piece. I might hit you up on it again! You got facebook or something like that?

Well, I'll be glad to see how you get on, but I'm afraid dA is about as close as I like to get to social marketing networks. (I do technically have a G+ account, but I signed up by accident, only bother to check it every coupla months or so when I get a reminder mail about something, and have never posted anything on it)
Very best of luck on your efforts tho!

(FYI, if you're looking for work, you can find TONS of it on facebook, that's why I asked.)

Thanks chief! I'm still kinda refining the technique, but it shows some promise. And I wish I could talk Kim into drawing some more pics - had a lot of fun with these lines!

Thanks man. Aye, as experiments go, this one was pretty successful. It's not gonna suit every style of lines I get my hands on, but it might actually work quite well with your stuff - I may have to have another wee hunt through your gallery when I get some spare time. ;D

Did you learn cuts and grads from a book? I'd love to be able to color this well. Beautiful job on him.

artmunki In reply to JericaWinters [2012-07-06 01:02:17 +0000 UTC]
Actually, no. I *tried* to learn it from a book ages ago (Hi-Fi Colour for Comics), but although I completely understood the process, the way I normally work out my rendering made it really difficult to make the transition to cuts & grads, and in the end I just sorta gave up. I never particularly liked that style of colouring tho, so I wasn't that motivated to push it,
I've learned a lot since then tho, and I've recently seen a few people use some different kinds of C&G, so I kinda figured out my own way to do it in my head (I can think in fluent photoshop, and often do so even while out walking about - does that make me sad? ). That's pretty much how I've learned all my colouring - I see someone doing stuff I like the look of, think about what they were doing that I liked, and then I throw bits of that into the mix with all the other odd techniques I've borrowed or figured out, and see what comes out. It's taken me AGES to get where I am, and I still have a ways to go, but doing stuff this way means I colour like me, not like anyone else. It's not gonna be to everyone's taste, but I kinda dig it! ;D

Well, if you can't figure it out at all, you'd probably benefit from having at look at the Hi-Fi book. I think the way you colour could quite easily be adapted to cuts & grads, so you might have an easier time of it than I did! ^_^

I'll try and get a copy of the book or find something better depending on the book reviews. I hope it isn't too hard to learn.

Glad you like it, man. It just seemed like the right piece for an experiment I've been mulling over for ages. I'll stick to my regular style for pagework for the time being tho - I want the final TPB to be at least moderately consistent, and this technique would just take too long to be practical at the moment anyway.
Gotta give credit where it's due tho - working on Filler has done more to advance my colouring than almost everything else I've done combined. I can't thank you enough for that, man!

It worked like a charm, man. And even though you won't primarily use this new style for Filler, it's always good to have a few tricks up your sleeve. There'll be more projects to come after all.
