Description Another PSD for y'all to play with!

On this one, the oval in the BG was just something I added for own purposes - it's not in the linework, so just dump it if you don't wanna use it.

my coloured version [link]

a note about the way I setup my lines - you can either apply the layer mask on the lines layer and you'll just have the linework itself floating on the layer. Or keep the layer mask, and use the pencil & fill tools on the left-hand pane (ie - not the mask side) as essentially a 'flats' layer for colour-holds, kinda thing. Any questions, drop me a message.

Yeah, I'll probably put some color to them when I get the time. I'll be sure and post the link here when I color it! Thanks so much for taking the time to post the flats! That's such a huge help and time saver!

Thanks, chief! Happy to contribute!

I was actually gonna drop you a wee note last night (but got distracted ^_^ ) - quite a few of the flats you've posted look like they'd be fun to play with, but you posted them as jpegs, so they can't be used for making selections. I was just gonna say, could you post PNGs in future if you're doing the side-by-side thing? PNG is lossless and still fairly decent compression, so it works much better for flats.

Sup man.
Yeah I'll keep that in mind. can you not just use the magic wand tolerance 1-2 and select them? I don't really use conventional methods...

Yeah, I played with that, but if you throw the tolerance enough to catch all of the area, you start to pic up other bits that aren't part of it. I mean, you can do it with a bit of tidying, but looks like it's really just the jpeg compression that's causing the problem.
Would I be right in saying your flats are from a channel rather than a layer (I generally find that to be the case when someone's flats are greyscale), or is your technique even more exotic than that? ^_^

I use layers actually. I was completely self-taught so I think my technique has alot of differences. I also do alot of painting from pencils and I often don't lassoo to flat, I just paintbrush it (and often the flow is about 50). Even using inks, I often use the paintbrush. It gives a more traditional feel y'know, you get a better vibe from it.
here I am babbling away o_O! yeah, I'll use PNG instead of JPEG. I'll see if I can get the time to upload PNGs instead of JPEGs.

All hail quirky self-taught colouring! ;D
I'm the same. I originally came at colouring from a digital painting angle, and a lot of my techniques are a hang-over from that. I only use the lasso occasionally for my flats tho - generally I use the pencil tool instead. I'm just too bloody slow with the lasso! The pencil's pretty much the same as using the paintbrush tho (it's essentially the same tool after all), but it gives you much cleaner flats - you should give it a try.

Anyway, thanks for posting all those flats. I'll have to have a bash at one of them sometime.

I tried the pencil tool also, I don't find it smooth enough though :/. I'm pretty picky I must say.
I'm gonna try these flats soon anyway so thanks again man .

Check out my Shaun of the Dead one too - I've left the full holds on that one, so you can check out how I do my colour-holds with that setup too. It's quite a handy way of working ... well, I like it anyway! ^_^

hmm that does work pretty well.

And to make the holds in the first place, I just selected the normal flats-layer colour block, contracted the selection by a few pixels, and filled the selection on the line-flats with my flats colour (if that makes sense!). Dead easy, dead quick and (with high-resolution lines and tidy-enough flats) generally effective.
