This really is evocative. I had lightning bugs growing up, but my kid doesn't. I can hardly wait to show this to her, because you've captured much more than "what a firefly looks like" here.

Great job.

oh... it's just from my child hood, as i mentioned. we had a tree on the playground on which a lot of these flies hang out..i donno if they liked the pollen or ate the leaf..i was too small to believe the scientific meaning but totally agreed when my mom said it's plain Magic I still believe it, and well, I don't get it, how could they cut down a magic tree just like that and feel nothing about it!! well, i suppose, we're the only reasons why new kids don't have fireflies, or a lot of other beautiful things go believe in! We replaced it with concrete, artificial grass or well, playstations and TV and stepped back nodding : "evolution" Do your kid believe in fairies?

I think you're right. Like a sunset. The scientific reason is dust and gases in the atmosphere and refraction of light rays but that's really just HOW it happens. I think the WHY is much more about magic.

I've told my critter that fairies are just in stories BUT she knows that it's wonderful to write stories and she fills page after page of comics for me with amazing tales. (She's been doing that since she was old enough to draw with a crayon instead of eat it.)

But she does believe (because I believe) that everything is alive, from the plants to the animals to the soil itself, and if you listen closely they all whisper stories to you. From the wind and the angle of the sun and the reddish tips of the trees telling you about spring coming, to the worms and the texture of the soil and how it smells telling you about whether it's ready to grow plants or not. You can call that magic, too. There's so much more to things than can be cataloged. I hope I've taught her that.

I'd kill to be able to think and write like ur critter. it's getting tougher day by day to think without being restricted by reasons and logic. it's a great thing you are doing by telling her that everything has life. People grow up too much too soon to forget such simple truths and that's exactly how they can't just enjoy the beauty of nature anymore. everything that's magical gets destroyed in front of our 'knowledge' and 'logical reasoning'. wouldn't it be so beautiful to go back once again to the age when you believed in things and magic without trying to understand what they were or how they happened..!?
