Check out "The Big Over Easy" and its sequel "The Fourth Bear," by Jasper Fforde. They take place in an alternate 2004 Reading, Berkshire, where Nursery-Rhyme characters live side by side with normal people. DCI Jack Spratt is the head of the Nursery Crime Devision of the Reading Police Department. Mary Mary is his assistant. Ashley the Rambosian is part of the alien equal-opportunity program and is the only alien on the force. The first book is about them investigating the death of Humpty Dumpty. The second deals with the disappearance of Goldilocks. The next book will be called "The Last Great Tortoise Race." Well worth reading!
