Description This painting of Saint Ephraim was a comission done for a fellow Church member who is going to frame it and then donate it to our Church... The writing on the scrolls is Aramaic, which was the language spoken by Jesus, and the language still spoken in our Church... I am not very familiar with writing in this language, so my apologies if I have made any mistakes...

The original picture that was given to me to use as a reference was done in a more Iconic style, but as I do not paint in that style I have painted it in my own ...

You should buy this book. You can order it on Amazon, very cheap for such beautiful texts. He isn't for nothing called the greatest poet in the patristic age.

The writing on the right scroll says this:

Eno Afrem moyeth no. u diyatiqi kotheb no tehwe sohdutho, ltalmide dbothar. Hwaw aminin baslutho, imomo u lilyo. Dakoro dkoreb utone, shofron 'allothe. Lo tehwun ag mayine, dmaw'on kube haqlothhun. Hwaw aminin baslutho. Dayno dmaheb lo sagi, mene meth'adar batrayhun 'ulme.

What means:

I Ephrem am dying and writing my Testament,
To be a witness for the pupils who come after me:
Be constantly praying, day and night;
As a ploughman who ploughs again and again,
Whose work is admirable.
Do not be like the lazy ones in whose fields thorns grow.
Be constantly praying, for he who adores prayer
Will find help in both worlds.

But it is not this reason why he is portrayed with 2 angels on his side. If you want I can explain you the meaning behind this picture. That was just my 2cents.

Thanks for the translation. I would love to hear the reason why he is portrayed with 2 angels.

There is nothing on my profile yet but I hope soon to add some stuff. I am busy with re-drawing our saints. I am also a member of the Syriac Orthodox Church, are you a Suryeyto(Aramean)? I am a member of the St. Jacob(James) of Sarugh church in Enschede The Netherlands. I am also the founder of the Syriac Orthodox Youthplatform of the Syriac Orthodox Monastery Mor Ephrem in The Netherlands.

Thank you so much! Glad that you like it. ...What Church do you go to?

I checked out your profile but there isn't anything there... I guess you just like to check out the artwork. I see you're from the Netherlands, my parents are from there too. I was born here however. We belong to Saint Mark's Syriac Orthodox Church in Hamilton Ontario, Canada. I have several other Religious paintings in my gallery if you'd care to check them out. They're all hanging in our Church now.

Amazing! I love it! I wish my church had paintings like this! I like how you made it realistic, yet still kept a little of the iconic side with the yellow halo behind his head. The background is very nice aswell, with reflection of the river, and the faded white mountains are a very nice touch. Absolutey beautiful! Definitely faving this one.

Well I'm glad you like it...Thank you. I may touch it up a bit tomorrow when the old eyes have had a chance to recooperate, and I notice things I've missed, but I think it's pretty much done... and Thanks for the Fave!
