Well, ''Vuk''.
I have no idea how to write the author's name properly, so I won't even try, but it's originally from some eastern (?) European country, then translated into other languages.

Yay, thanks for clarifying! It's also amazing to find fellow Vuk fans!
It was also one of my 1st favorite books (because I never had just one first) and it still is!
Animation film? Well, not so much. The exact opposite in fact. I have a story about it. I was super excited when I saw the DVD in a shop and without much thought used all the pocket money I had to buy it (back then it was a big deal in early 2000s) because although I hated the book illustrations (they were ugly) and I suspected the animation might use similar repulsive style, I was really excited because I thought it would include my favorite scene, the one where Vuk's parents fight and die. Instead, IT DIDN'T. It just cut to black. When I saw that I instantly turned it off got rid of the disc (I either gifted it away or destroyed it, I don't remember anymore, it might have been the latter actually) never actually watching the rest of that animated abomination for which I had burned a lot of money (well it actually was close to nothing(about 20$ nowadays money I think), but it felt like huge deal for a kid, who usually doesn't get any pocket money at all (now I don't understand why I never just asked my parents to buy it for me, as they would have haha)).

Nah, It's okay! I was sharing this as a funny experience story (well, it wasn't funny THEN, but it is now ).
Oops, sorry. I had forgotten it was Hungarian (the book description said that, but I haven't reread it inΒ some years) when I wrote the comment. I've been to Hungaria and I know it's definitely Central European! I absolutely know the feeling when someone mistakenly says your birth country is Eastern European. I have the same problem. I was born in Latvia, a North European country, but people keep mistaking it for East Europe. Dx
Ah, is that true? Then Vuk means fox in some different language, because I remember reading about it and I thought that must have been where the book Vuk got that name. I should probably try to find what was the language.

Uuh, I don't understand what you mean... The main character is named Vuk in all versions, regardless. I was just saying that the word ''vuk'' means fox in some other language, which I previously thought to be Hungarian, but then you explained it's not Hungarian, so it must be another one.
