Description "Dreaming on Aquamarine Tides" -- lineart in ballpoint pen, colored in Corel Painter

This is one of the older themes for the Enchanted Visions Project , which I am a contributing member of. November 2010 theme was "working with/from a stock image" and totally thwarted my creativity. lol I didn't participate, but instead signed up for the Sketchbook Project to keep myself drawing every day.

The weedy sea dragons are so much fun to color. Love the tiny dots and colors. I spent a nice chunk of a lovely afternoon on this image, which is like meditation of its own kind. ^^

Taking a break from the Sketchbook Project. I did play with some ideas for the next few pages, but nothing is complete as of today to show.

I really love your style it remindes me of alder anime style like "rose of versailles" .
And the way you colour digitally is so appealing! the colours are delicate and the composition is always fabulous!

Yes, my doodles tend to gravitate towards that late 70s to 80s shoujo manga style. Many of the manga of that era had beautiful line work. My favorite influence, though, I must say is Yamato Waki, who did Asaki Yumemishi, a manga retelling of the famous "Tale of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu.

I've been working in Corel Painter for almost 2 years now. My recent works are getting closer and closer to what I've always wanted to achieve with digital painting programs. I think I've been trying to reproduce the look and feel of watercolor. ^^

I know Asaki Yumemishi...how couldn't I get to that!
It's such a nostalgic feeling
your digital work looks indeed like watercolours, gourgeous.
Thanks for taking the time to explain to me.

Blue! And I love those sea dragons! As much as I love the ones that are more defined, I'm entirely taken with the one in the background that's faded away because of distance lol /weird XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aruarian-dancer In reply to Catssyclaws [2010-12-06 17:01:31 +0000 UTC]

Blue!!! Hehe. There are so many beautiful shades to play with and they're all so soothing. I had a really nice time working on this. And the sea dragons were so fun to color, just like the dragonflies.
It's always a challenge for me to not make things too bright (Overdoing comes easily to me... lol ), so what you say here makes me happy. ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Catssyclaws In reply to aruarian-dancer [2010-12-07 01:39:04 +0000 UTC]

XD I loved those dragon flies too... and you make me wonder what's "too bright" to you... ^_^ Because bright to me is like a bunch of neon or something. lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aruarian-dancer In reply to Catssyclaws [2010-12-07 02:29:41 +0000 UTC]

I think I should rephrase myself there. Maybe "too saturated" might address my issue more accurately than "too bright". I have to work on my pieces with one eye elsewhere (as if I'm a teacher looking at a student's work -- THIS is the occupational hazard of being a dance teacher... guh, we become such fault finders, it can make things joyless if we're not careful. ) to keep myself going wild with colors (or overdoing the sparklies!!!). This one, too, had a phase when the red sea dragon was way oversaturated in color intensity that it totally lost the balance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Catssyclaws In reply to aruarian-dancer [2010-12-07 02:35:52 +0000 UTC]

Aaahh gotcha! So it's more of an "overdoing it on the eyes" sort of thing. Like those crazy geometric things that make you dizzy if you stare at them long enough? lol It's the same with colors... don't want to kill anyone's eyes.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aruarian-dancer In reply to Catssyclaws [2010-12-07 02:51:46 +0000 UTC]

Yep yep. And I'm still getting used to this new monitor that's a lot bigger than my old one. Everything looks so bright and sometimes overwhelming.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Catssyclaws In reply to aruarian-dancer [2010-12-07 07:24:41 +0000 UTC]

LOL Is there any way to change the settings? Like maybe they're more vibrant than a regular monitor? lol I dunno XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aruarian-dancer In reply to Catssyclaws [2010-12-07 15:28:55 +0000 UTC]

I turned the brightness setting down from 100 to 64 when I was working on the Indian Red Moth Fairy picture and haven't reset it since. It's still plenty bright, but it could be my eyes... T_T Jr. thinks it's fine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Catssyclaws In reply to aruarian-dancer [2010-12-08 03:54:30 +0000 UTC]

LOL You should post something you think looks off in color (too bright, too saturated etc) and see what other people think. That'd be another way to find out. OR that could be me just wanting to see something you think is too loud. XD

You made the sea dragons visible while still having them look quite kelpy. It's quite the amazing feat since they're just hidey little creatures.

aruarian-dancer In reply to starsinmyteacup [2010-12-06 17:03:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. ^^ They sure are hard to spot. ^^ I started the coloring with the sea dragons, and when I was done with them, I didn't want to do much with the girl or her kelpy hair.

You are amazing. Can you write as well as you can draw?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aruarian-dancer In reply to AmbiiLu [2010-12-06 17:06:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't like writing at all. It's too left-brain for me, and English is my second language so it gets even more needlessly analytical.

But I was a pretty mean dancer (I've quit after a major injury.) and am a decent piano player.

Don't like writing? I was going to say, you could write and illustrate a book.
I'm learning to play the piano. It's hard for me.
