She worries about a lot of things and is skeptical about the motive of the French when they declared war against Germany, but then again, she was too young to fully understand such things (albeit as a French woman herself, and having been brought up by the beliefs of a French General, she fought on behalf of the Allied forces). The war, from her perspective, was a mere display of power, dragging the innocent lives of civillians in the process. She manifests these traits in such a manner that in spite of her outgoing and friendly nature, she is distrustful of everyone even after meeting them for long. Although, of course, she is careful to keep these thoughts to herself.

Despite her seemingly jaded outlook of the world as an entirety, however, she shows much enthusiasm to challenge the orthodox, and believes in the power of change for the better; the phrase comme il faut simply does not sit well for the young lass. Marie Penelope Charlotte Madeleinne was born on the greener side of Pays de la Loire, on an aristocratic family, as the only daughter of the Soustelles, second to the then only four-year-old Philippe, and third to the five-year-old, Xavier. Yvonne, her mother, called her Poppy, everyone else, however, called her Pip. As a child, she had been brought up on a strict household, given the nature of her father, Charles', occupation. Rather than father, the children referred to him as The General. Unfortunately for her, her brothers were Xavier and Philippe Soustelle, a tag team of troublesome boys who always dragged her into their silly antics, that she always got in trouble with the general, and even when she wasn't a part of it, house rules imply that everyone would get punished for any one's antics. Each of the three children; Xavier, Philippe, and Penelope, were struck by a long, thin disciplinary stick on the palms, that growing up, Penelope wondered if her hands were much redder than her friends'.

The large house was never quiet with the antics of the three children, except when it was. As she aged five, Xavier was sent to Britain with their father, a year after that, it was Philippe's turn. Her father was never home, all her brothers had gone to boarding school, and her mother was always out with the other soldiers' wives. Penelope soon found herself wandering an almost empty house, with only Luther (a dog) and some servants to accompany her. Thank heavens for the Wittgenstein family.

It was the Summer of 1933 when she met a certain Hans and Gretl. Funny, she thought, their names sounded like something she's read on a fairytale. They were foreigners, Germans, like the origin of the tale. Hans and Gretl always came down to their chateau, and as it naturally goes, she became closely acquainted to the two children as she grew up, even so far as developing a youthful liking towards the young male Wittgenstein.

1939. It was the midst of the 20th century, Penelope was only the fresh age of fifteen when the second world war broke out. The war divided the country, and their home fell under the occupation zone. At the outbreak of the war, General Soustelle was put in command of the French Fifth Army's tanks in Alsace. Her father had seen it coming, and her elder brothers Xavier and Philippe, had been preparing all their lives to defend the country, one from the ocean, the other from the skies. And the Wittgensteins disappeared five years later.

Prior to their disappearance was a painful farewell, upon which the Soustelles have decided to break all ties with the Wittgensteins. The general and his wife did not want to get any of their children to be involved. The Wittgensteins were Jews, and if they were forced off the country. Not even general Soustelle could do anything. Funny, Penelope thought, if only Hansel and Gretel from the childhood fairytale had been home instead of wandering off…if only the Wittgenstein family were in Germany instead of France… would they have had better chances of staying alive? Ah…perhaps not. For Penelope who loved Johannes even after his departure, this was her wake up call; this time she wouldn't sit back and ignore the chaos.

Driven by principle, Penelope joined an underground resistance against both her parents' will, and with the help of both her brothers' connections. They dealt with the war with wits. For a year, Penelope disguised herself as a twenty year old woman, writing for the publication of the resistance; Chienlit, which was a pun for masquerade. Their activities, aside from publishing the newsprint, involved stealing weaponry and tools from the enemies. Everything felt like childsplay until their base has been discovered by the opposing forces.

Only Penelope and three other members of the organization were able to navigate away from their sight. They would have been taken on a concentration camp in Auschwitz, if they hadn't come upon a mansion. Being the only female on the group, the three men helped Penelope to be the first to climb across the gate. Little did they know this would be the last they would see of the young woman.

Charles Andre Joseph Soustelle [53]- The Brigade General of the French Fifth Army. In spite of her denial towards the matter, her father raised her less strictly compared to all her brothers under the bias that she was his only daughter.
Yvonne Marie Elisabeth Soustelle (née: Vendroux) [55]- Yvonne was not your typical 20th-century-stay-at-home-mother. She spent most of her time with recreational hobbies and friends than she did with her children, and was more the materialistic type. No matter how distant she might seem, however, Penelope (and her brothers) loved her nonetheless.
Jean Xavier Elliot Soustelle [21] - Xavier is Philippe's best man, and Penelope's favorite brother. Unlike the younger Soustelle monsieur, Xavier is affectionate and protective which made Penelope develop a much closer relation to him in comparison to Philippe.
Jean Philippe Louie Soustelle [20] - Philippe is Xavier's best man, and Penelope's greatest enemy in the simplest implication of the title. Philippe has always been the silliest one of the bunch and often got the three in trouble. Although he was quite the mischief-maker, he cares very deeply for his little sister and has played a significant role in her membership to the resistance’s publication.
Margaret Wittgenstein [14] - Margaret's family had always been closely tied with the Soustelles, but Gretl was special. Gretl was Penelope’s best friend, and perhaps the only other person in history to refer to her as Poppy (other than her mother).
Johannes Wittgenstein [19] - Margaret's elder brother whom Penelope loved. It was a one-sided puppy love, her feelings for Hans, and she was never able to tell him prior to his death.
Andrea Wittgenstein [50] - Gretl and Hans' mother, who was a close confidant of Yvonne Soustelle.
