Description Just a quick paint in photoshop using image reference. He's looking a bit more heroic rather than poignant and bitter... but oh well.

hmm, I'd say it's tricky to learn at first... just getting used to painting on the computer. But once you're familiar with where everything is and what everything does, then it becomes just another tool you can use (like a pencil and paper or a paintbrush.) At that point, it'll be all about your drafting abilities.

You can use it for so many things so it's definitely something worth learning, especially if you want to get into digital art (graphic design, concept art, storyboarding... etc.)

There are a lot of tutorials you can watch online (on youtube) which you can just search up. Personally, I use it to do a lot of concept art - and I had to do an online course for it on schoolism.com (Digital Painting with Bobby Chiu) - just to learn painting techniques. It takes years and years and loads of practice to become real good at it and I'm still learning after almost 10 years.

Hahah essay-length response. But I hope that helps!

Yeah, no worries. I'm happy to help young artists with any advice I can. It's great you're starting this young!

Using a tablet is slightly awkward at first. But the more you use it, the easier it gets. It beats drawing into the computer with a mouse though. For one thing, using a tablet won't give you RSI like using a mouse would. Plus if you have Photoshop CS4 and you're getting the Intuous 4, it's great because you can program shortcuts on your tablet's buttons. Like rotating the canvas... etc. I haven't tried it myself (I'm on CS3) but I hear it can feel a bit closer to painting traditionally.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your Christmas present! Make great use of it and make lots of art!
