Description A piece I finished a while back, but never got around to posting. About life size, a big piece of maple trunk, which was really too wet when I started carving it, though I don't mind the checking as long it doesn't go through the face.

Has anyone else done busts in green wood and noticed that as long as there isn't the beginning of a crack through the face area, new cracks don't tend to develop there? I've often wondered if the shape effects the stress in the wood in some way to guide cracks away from face.

The shape does effect the cracking.
I carve green wood pretty regularly and very often the crack starts where the wood is cut most deeply.

Very nice. I like where you aimed the cracks. I carve green cedar as much as I can and an interesting observation I've made is that cracks don't seem to take the shortest route from the heart to the surface as I expected. To avoid crack repairs I halve or quarter the log and remove any left over heart wood. However, I prefer to aim the cracks strategically, as you have done here. Excellent sculpture.

Paint the bottom to avoid air circulation btw the vertical fiber of the wood that cause cracking
