I'm loving the ridiculously-thick border at the top. Reminds me of some of the CoroCoro jumbos, but flipped. The overall blank is also very lovely.

With alot of time, patience and anger haha!
Photoshop is a must tbh, if your incredibly serious about making them, although GIMP a free alternative is used by a few (bit limited for the most part that one, but free)
From then on I personally learnt by literally clicking everything, to see what it does. To this day I still do that by playing with layers/filters, seeing what can do what to the picture at hand.
Mostly though with custom blanks I make, I draw them first, or at least parts of them. Then see if they fit, if stages 1 and 2 can be added to the original design, is there room for all text, etc etc.
Its a long process but great when it works

That it is to start with, but once you get going being careful with placements and such, it gets easier. We have a group specific for fakes here on DA (see my sig) for guides/resources too
