A big thanks to Ludick Kepler for the photography. I really adore Mai and and after a lot of trials with the wig, I'm finally happy with the way this costume came out.Snow Patrol's Set the Fire to the Third Bar is on the top of my Maiko playlist. This location looks much more Earth Kingdom than Fire Nation to me, and I liked the idea Mai travelling across rivers, farms, and state lines to end up there.

Over rivers, farms, and state lines
The distance from 'A' to where you'd be
It's only finger-lengths that I see
I touch the place where I'd find your face
My finger in creases of distant dark places

I love it. I just made my Mai costume but that only thing I really have trouble with is the hair style. Think you could give me a few pointers?

Hi! Sorry, I haven't logged in in quite a while, so I'm just seeing your comment now.
I think for me the biggest thing was using detachable buns rather than trying to style the wefts already on the wig into some sort of bun. I used bump-its to give the wig shape- they're sewn into the wig cap and then the wig is styled over them. After I styled the base I added the buns over the top, they're just pinned into place. I hope that helps a bit.

I really recommend a wig! It'll save you a lot of time getting dressed, and it's easier to keep things in place when you can sew and glue them there.

I saw this on Cosplay.com and faved it. This is seriously the best looking Mai cosplay on there (and I know because I looked through all 84 pages of ATLA, lol). Good job! The gloves have got to be my favorite part of this ensemble.

Thanks! I will be trying to get a tutorial at least of the wig up eventually, but it's on the back burner until my cosplay partner and I get through the next couple projects on our list.

Wait, I cosplay Ty Lee, and my playlist of songs I listen to when I'm sewing a new costume (I'm making the full Ty Lee wardrobe, is that a little too obsessed?) has this song in it. It's a great maiko song!! Actually, a lot of snow patrol can be good shipping songs. Though I think Maiko is great, I'm more of a Ty Zula girl.

It IS! I downloaded an FST from somewhere on LJ that had this song, Hush Sound's Wine Red, What She Came For, Dragon Queen, and a few other songs that generally make great fire kids music. There's some Snow Patrol on there too.

Haha, thank you! Actually I'll be nitpicky with you and point out that her nails are only black about half the time. She seems to ditch the black nails after she hooks up with Zuko.
... except for when they accidentally show up for like a frame and then disappear again.
