Description The ferocious bulldog fish, gluttonous terror of the Niobrara and inland oceans, prone to choking on meals. Xiphactinus is decently common from a lot of inland sea deposits, and as such it's known from Alabama as well. I've actually helped dig up one of these in Dallas, Texas, and ever since it's been one of my favorite prehistoric fish.

The coloration, as suggested by fellow DA user geekspace, is based loosely on that of the speedy little Dorado. I played with Barricuda hues at first, but I got bored with all of the silvers and decided to go for something a little flashier.

I had no idea you went in for field work; color me even more impressed. How big intact was that brute?

Anyhow, still another damn fine job adapting small-fry coloration to fit a heavyweight hunter. That subtle emerald-and-olive dappling would blend into its fair share of subsurface environs. Furthermore, for some reason the sharp efficiency of those fins impresses me nearly as much as that rugged mug.

Not terribly. It was from an individual about six or seven feet long, with ribs and vertebrae and bits of jawbone. It was discovered on the grounds of my brother's high school, and the science teacher marshaled a bunch of volunteers to help extract it from the limestone.

Fantastic. And hey, six feet of bulldog-fish still trumps anything currently in the Great Lakes short of big sturgeon.

There's another one coming down the pipe pretty soon. And it's a doozy.
