Autumn 2010. John's aunt asked us to paint the inside of her house. While we were painting the kitchen, I decided I was gonna be cute and doodle a little heart with our initials. When John saw it, he smiled then proceeded to paint his own cutsie doodle next to mine. As he explained it to me, I fell in love with that boy a little bit more.
He drew what is called an 'Ai-Ai Gasa' which literally translates to 'Love-Love Umbrella'. It is the Japanese equivalent to the hearts Americans draw as an expression of love for their sweethearts. The origin of the Ai-Ai Gasa is actually very romantic.
There was a time in Japan, when it was considered scandalous for couples (married or not) to even hold hands in public. The closest a man could be to a woman that was socially acceptable in public, was when it was raining and he held an umbrella for her.

I'm just not sure why it was changed to gasa. kasa is the word for umbrella... i am most curious as to why though
