(pokemon or character wise? pokemon wise, Grovyle always had the best mid evolution design, pesnally... next to bayleaf.
character would be grovyle because he turned out to be your buddy, but at the same time Dusknoir's fear of disappearing was deeply relateable. ;v; )

I prefer Dusknoir's character over grovyle's.
Only by a slight hair bit though.
We get bit more character development from him then GrovyleΒ
since we see him alot more often.
We get to see how smart and cunning he can be in planning to catch Grovyle
when we thought he was the good guy,
and
how kind he could be before he finds out that your character was the same human he was looking for in the first place.Β
The twist of him literally grabbing you and your partner by the neck
(At least that's what I assume happens)
and dragging them into the future was really well executed and genuinely shocking.
And with Special Episode 5...
my god, his motivation to keep from disappearing,like you said,Β
really does hit home and makes complete and total sense!
And his redemption was honestly one of the most genuinely happiest I've ever felt towards a character in my life honestly.
With Grovyle...we really don't get much backstory on why he and the human wanted the future to be restored.
I mean assuming they were born during the future's Paralysis, they wouldn't have know what it would've been like toΒ
see the sun rise or feel the wind on their faces.
That would just be normal to them.

though neck works to, wouldn't really hurt a long necked lizard.
as a kid I hated that scene though, he was taking my buddy away.
and I believe Celebi and Dialga are the cause of the rescue mission. Dialga being the heartless dictator and celebi giving them a promise of brighter future.
Time gears might be lost or permanently stuck in the future too that might have led to some speculation
