New addition for my Season 6 Episode Art!Season 6, Episode 7: Newbie Dash

This was quite the episode. Some cringe worthy but amusing moments, such as the Mane 6 impressions by Rainbow Dash. Seriously, though, one of the big parts of this episode, that's a bit emotional, is the fact that she actually made it into the wonderbolts! That was a dream since season 1! She... actually did it. Gotta give her that at least, a bit of pride for her, but then again her ego might slightly overshadow that haha. Either way, that's quite a long standing dream to be achieved, even if we did kinda expect at least something to happen.

Some great moments overall, and still a lesson. Something they still manage to sneak into episode ever since the beginning of the show. Sometimes feeling a sense of isolation, loneliness, or something along those lines, not realising that you're not alone. That others may very well be going through the same thing. But also that it's ok to make mistakes, it doesn't have to define us, but it does depend on how you handle it. RD had a rough start in that regard, but eventually it played out nicely.
As for the art process of this one, a bit longer piece again, although I took a long time with my sketches haha. I sketched all four of them out, slowly, but then I had to stumble over actually painting them... It helped they had the same uniforms... and the layering of the ones in the back teehee. The brushstrokes and details remained somewhat rough because of that, no real close up pass going over it, but at the same time, the scene allows a bit of that. Weighing the choices based on the fact I complete these in one session, and try to keep it manageable heh.

What can I say? Once again, your latest piece to this season's artwork is absolutely mind-blowing! It is just an awesome piece, if not even 20% cooler!
Seeing Rainbow Dash finally in full Wonderbolt uniform was something that was long-waited for since her vision of it all the way back in Season 1, and the detail you did here with her when she was performing with the Wonderbolts in front of Ponyville is just spectacular! The realism, the colors, just everything in this piece is so wonderfully done that I can barely even find enough words just to meet the minimum requirements for this critique!

This is a very well-done painting! The colors that you've added in the sky are very detailed and gives it a realistic look, despite My Little Pony being a cartoon. The details and shading you gave the uniforms and the ponies' manes and wings also added to the realistic effect. What's interesting is that Rainbow Dash is the only one smiling with her teeth shown, and I think that shows the meaning of this episode. Her dream was to become a wonderbolt, and she finally accomplished it after a year (or six years of this cartoon) of training. And even though there were some rough times at first, mainly having to accept her nickname as "Rainbow Crash", she's happy, even jubilant, with where she is right now. Overall, I really like your technique, and the hidden symbolism this painting shows.

Hated this episode so much myself it put me and many of my friends who have been pony fans for years off the show. Was the final nail on the coffin though, as we been wondering for awhile.
Then Newbie Dash happened by a writer who has not written anything for so many years he was basically some kid drawing circles and they made the episode out of it.

This is a beautiful picture. I'm always amazed by your speed and quality.
I think the episode was mediocre at best, maybe not even that. I thought last week's episode was cringeworthy, but wow, I was very wrong. Dash's character development showed at the beginning of the episode but then it all went to hell and she became just as reckless as ever. Showing off has always been her greatest weakness and I was really hoping she was past that already, but no. Like I've said many times, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash episodes tend to be my least favorite episodes and this one turned out no different. I mean, it's great that she finally became a Wonderbolt, but everything that went wrong after that was not funny and it was extremely difficult to watch. The Wonderbolts were jerks again and the lesson of the episode was pretty terrible. I guess I shouldn't expect Rainbow Dash to learn anything from this fiasco either, because if I do, I'll just be disappointed the next time she screws up.
All that said, it wasn't the worst Rainbow Dash episode ever. Mysterious Mare-Do-Well and Tanks for the Memories still hold that title. I thought last week's episode was the worst episode of season six so far, but now I definitely must correct myself. Twilight's craziness last week was nothing compared to Dash's recklessness and outright stupidity this week. 6/10.

it was classic Rainbow, somewhat she knows that herself but it's in her nature. She loves to be in front.
The real lesson is: "I need to know how to work in a team. It's time to be about more than myself."
And it's the next character development for Rainbow : being awesome it's not only about herself.
In "May the Best Pet Win!", she was shallow, but she learned to see the value in someone (Tank), than loyalty is of course what matters, not coolness.
In "Tanks for the Memories" it's about not everything can work like she wants and she needs to accept that.
She's a reckless one, an obstinate pony, she knows she's great and it can blind her. It's what the character have to work with to be better. The result is also she'll do whatever it needs to help, she'll never give up someone.
it's like with Fluttershy "baby step". If the character was just no more with faults just after one lesson, one adventure, it would be boring , and in a way sad. Rainbow's faults and the will to still work with people is what mades Rainbow a full character. Someone not perfect but still loveable.

Well, that sounds like a much better lesson than: "We all have embarrassing nicknames because we all have screwed up in the past, get over it."
I have more problems with Tanks for the Memories than just Rainbow's behavior even though that is one of the main reasons why I hate that episode. Still, you make some very good points and I think it's great how you believe that Dash can still improve. I'm not saying she needs to be perfect, I just don't like it when characters need to learn the exact same lessons over and over again. Almost every character in the show seems to forget their previous character development every now and then, but luckily it's not always done in a completely unbelievable way. This episode just happened to be one of those times when it was done poorly.

About the lesson, because it's a chilld show, it's easy to see the point the writers want to convey : listen to the main characters, they will summarise it for the audience. Rainbow told it herself : learning to work in a team, to be a part of it, at last.

baby steps, baby steps
I don't see it done "poorly" : they gave a reason why Rainbow would be upset (the nickname stuff) and mixed it with her natural instinct to stand out and being more awesome than everyone else around. And in same time, fleshed out a little the wonderbolt characters like Clip..I mean Soarin
If you remove all flaws in a character, you have nothing to make stories and to make the characters deep.
Or, in an other way you could see like that: I'm old, I can learn again and again the lesson, but nature always come back, I'll have a tendency to repeat old patterns and I need to be conscious of that to stop. We don't change, we learn.
The same for a character, you have basic features for them and they'll fight to go beyond. The most interesting thing about a character like Rainbow Dash is its worst enemy is herself.
