Description Finally, Applejack from Pony to (full) Human.

Female face portraits have been a weakness for a long time. Over the last year slowly getting more comfortable with it. This time I tried to push it again, see where I'm at. Also just portraits in general. Although I should focus on bodies as well... hehe

Quite a bit of imperfections, but if I do this more often I can push those out better and then again, nice faces aren't "perfect" either

Anywho, although it's a bit of a distraction from my "First Contact War" work, Applejack may distract me any time any day, I live in AJ time anyhow.

First off, I'd just like to start out by saying that the paints used in this look beautiful. The overall concept is very well-done and the composition of the painting is very well put-together. Applejack's hair in particular is very finely detailed and looks great.

That said, however, this painting kind of creeps me out, in an "uncanny valley" sort of way. While her torso, hair, and hat all look good, AJ's eyes kind of bother me. While the picture is obviously striving to look realistic, the eyes are disproportionately large compared to actual human eyes. If this were done in a less realistic style, large eyes wouldn't be a problem, but trying to create a realistic-looking human face makes the less realistic size of her eyes look somewhat off-putting.

Other than that, it's a solid picture.

Sorry to hear this leans on the uncanny valley for you.
I'm fully aware of larger proportionate eyes, looking at the first steps in the WIP it's something I started off with. However, for me this falls within regions to where I can connect it to actual faces I've seen myself. There might be different factors playing here as the skull shape and size also matters.

What can indicate it's not the actual eye size (which can still be on the large side although really marginally when compared unlike actual Anime eyes) but something else. The primary thing that can actual be seen is that AJ's eyes are more open than most. Most humans have fairly closed eyes (not just Asians )
Part of the reason you can tell that is the eye white below the iris. Which is more visible than usual, so I'd pin the feeling there mainly.

Can't say I deliberately chose to open them up this far. I guess that's something I skipped on as I focused on the other eye parts trying to get the angle for the rest right. A bit of a lift for the lower eye lid could probably work here.

Although the shading went for realism, the structure and general proportions are pushed in a slight stylized way. Her skull height is fairly short for example. (Beyond what the lower camera angle would do)

Thanks for the feedback. I had fun playing around with things like the eyes in this and part of the reason was building up my mental library for (female) portraits, see what choices I want to go with. I'll keep these things in mind. There's still plenty of room for improvement

I guess they're kinda hidden under the scarf. Although I do have to say the shading in her neck looks off so that might cause something. I probably forgot to finish shading her neck properly hehe.

AssasinMonkey In reply to Dgs-Krieger [2014-01-30 21:31:02 +0000 UTC]

Her face is fairly short (even with the slight low camera angle) so that might be part of the reason.
I guess we could also see it as a compliment for her? hehe
Usually I end up making my portraits very old looking, funny to hear the opposite this time haha XD
