I've been meaning to do some work with some bones I've had lying around forever but I was too worried about ruining the dremel bits to use them for something big. Apparently I've just been underestimating the little things.

That kind of bits are usually designed for soft metals like silver, brass and copper so bones are quite easy material after working with metals.

You can ask also some old bits from dentist office. (Dentists usually throw used drill bits in trash and they are still sharp enough for bone engraving, because normal leg bones are much softer material than teeths.)

Thanks. I used different engraving cutters like these [link] for the rough work and then finish the surface with fine grid sandpapers etc.

I've been making weapons from bones lately. Actually, I think I've told you this, already. Yeah, I did, because you mentioned having a pile of mooe bones. Have you done anything with those yet? I see that this is moose bone, but it posted a year ago. Either way, I'm still working with them. I love bones. They're neat.

...what I woldn't give for a Mammoth...

Cool. I just looked at you gallery and that jaw bone kama is really very exellent idea. I have one pair of moose jaws and i'm going to make probably some kind of primitive war mace from them in later. (Maybe some huge double bladed fantasy design..)

Last time when i made some bone objects was really in few years ago when i was still in South-Carelia Polytechic. (That letter opener is also from 2005 year..)

I have collected all kind of bone scraps like moose femur bones, jaw bones, and antler bits from reindeers and mooses after my school years, but i don't have time to make objects from them just yet, because i have so much other works in this part of the year.
That period between christmas and spring is the most quiet time to my forge business so then i usually try to make all kind of silver works and other more precise projects. (Probably also some bone pendants in next time..)

You may have to press the word, "reply" up there^ in order to read all of this.

The kama is just a Pile of intentionally positioned Bones; part of a visual list, if you will. I will eventually make a pair of them; a pair that will hold together against, well, ...the act of picking them up. I guess that My works are so far only display pieces. The punching dagger *may* be able to take *slightly* more abuse than the others, but... they sure do look neat. The future Kama will have a pole both reinforcing & connecting everything from the inside. I may fill the empty space leftover inside with something such as glue. I haven't figured out 100% how to affix the "Blade" to the shaft, except by drilling holes in parts of the jaw & tie-ing it to the handle. Also on My list is a "Pipe-Hawk" which I am still working on, spectacles, Wind-Chimes, a Ring, & several other things. I may not have your skills with a forge, but I *DO* have a Pile of Bones & a Lot of Free Time. I'll be posting more Bonework on Sunday. I'm going to try to post at least one piece of Bonework every Sunday until I run Out, in which case, I'll have to find a new medium in order to meet My own Arbitrary Deadline.

A drill would make much of this a bit easier.

It's a good thing that your bone kama is going to be only "decorative weapon", because it's really very difficult to make strong handle from only bone parts. (Most of the bone handles what i have seen for example in knifes are made only from one solid piece of bone and that makes it a lot of easier..)

You can maybe put some steel bar inside the bone parts, but i don't know is there room enough. (Inside surfaces need to be also very straight if you want to thrust some rod in the middle..)

I hope I am never in a situation where this is the only weapon I have available. I would absolutely *Hate* to break it. As the cliche goes, "I put My Soul into My work." I would assume that you do as well.

I was going to use a very thin rod for this, where there would be a bit of empty space surounding most of it. Then I would use some kind of fill for it. I may have to remove certain parts of the middle of the bones. There is some kind of ridge inside them that I don't need. I may use wire in parts, and more hemp again. These crafts help pass time, & they're productive.

Do you have any other suggestions that could help Me out?

It's almost impossible to invent the most suitable solutions for works like that, if i can see only some photographs from the materials etc. (I usually need to hold all the parts in my hands and study them few hours, before i can developed some proper plans for so unique projects..)
