In the original story before Lovecraft got his paws on it, Hoffman Price described Umr'At'Tawil as an Arab who had lived far beyond the normal, possible human lifespan and that Carter was sent back to relive the life of an ancestor in the Arabian Nights period *. Such seemed humdrum to Lovecraft who jazzed up the story to wild delirium. Hoffman Price was not pleased at this.
I read the original story in a collection of ORIGINAL pre-revision stories from CRYPT OF CTHULHU.
