heather afton (née edwards) was a programmer who graduated from the same college as william, but didn't meet him until the spring of 1977, while he was creating the springlock mechanism for aster bunny. the two hit it off and married within the year, and while william afton loved his wife dearly, he was not a good father to his children and frequently absent from their marriage. while heather did assist in william's work by programming the animatronics and the AI within the toy and funtime animatronics, heather and william's union was rocky for the majority of the time they spent together, up until william mysteriously disappeared. to this day, heather doesn't know where he went.

michael afton was william's first child, but the two had a bad relationship for a large portion of michael's life. for starters, william was largely absent from michael's early childhood due to the work he was doing, though he was affectionate with his kid back then. as michael grew and developed his own interests outside of robotics, william became less and less invested in his son and even grew to dislike him a little. while michael took to his little sister elizabeth, he disliked his younger brother alex for a lot of their childhoods, as william poured attention onto alex in a bid to mold him into his own image.

michael began to act out to get attention and bullied alexander relentlessly, eventually instilling a fear of animatronics and foxy specifically in the young boy. these frustrations from a young mind culminated in the bite of '93, in which alex's head was put inside of golding bear's jaws mid performance and triggered the springlock mechanisms inside, biting down on alex's head to the point of a minor concussion. any love william had for michael was gone by that point. in the year following the bite, william abused michael on a consistent basis, which not only messed up william's marriage but also drove michael away from the afton house as a young teen.

michael remained in contact with his siblings and mother, despite the abuse he'd suffered. although his father and sister disappeared not long after the bite of '97 and his mother and alexander moved a state over a year later, michael didn't formally investigate the matter until the year 2000. he got hired at his father's old company as a night guard under a false name to dig up dirt on his dad, only to be fired for his meddling. he then sought big top entertainment and rental, discovered his father's animatronics and was subsequently killed by them in the scooping room for ennard to use as a skin suit. his spirit didn't pass on though; instead, it haunted the mortal realm in search of answers and the whereabouts of his father, which he eventually found in fazbear's fright.

elizabeth afton was killed at the age of 14 by calliope/circus baby by accident. while her father wasn't interested in her for much of her life, elizabeth strove to act as a peacekeeper and the good girl of the family in order to earn her father's approval. she, like her dad, was exceptionally bright, dedicated to her school work, and a bit introverted, but such things never came to fruition. midway through the process of separating himself from fazbear entertainment, william brought his daughter to big top entertainment and rental to show her his work.

what william didn't know is that the AI within his animatronics was reacting with the functions they were built with, in order to generate a personality. essentially, these caused impulsive tics as the AI figured out the body it was within. elizabeth found calliope and was immediately enamored by her, only to be scooped a moment later by such an impulsive tic. william locked the warehouse and fled the scene, leaving elizabeth's dead body in the building and within calliope. the only person who found out what happened to her is her mother; this is why heather and alexander moved out of state.

alexander afton used to be the apple of his father's eye, in spite of his fear of animatronics and mannequins, until the bite of '93. as a result of this incident, alexander sustained a minor concussion which caused sleep paralysis and ptsd. as far as william was concerned, his child was lost to him, and so he ended up distancing himself from alex like the rest of his children. despite alexander's disability, he was loved by his mother and sister and eventually his older brother as well. the two never properly made up for the bite, as michael was addled with guilt and tried to remove himself from alex's life to not hurt him and alex was in the throes of adolescence while being haunted by nightmare.
