Description
Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) - a species of the giraffe family that lives in the deep, lush tropical forests of the Congo (DRC). It is endangered, highly elusive, and most of what is known about it comes from the captive animals throughout the world.
It may seem like some crazy mix between a zebra and giraffe with its characteristic striped legs - a possible adaptation for blending in the forest (think the patterns of where the light hits the forest) -, long neck, horn-like ossicones found only in males, and their shiny, velvety coat that reminds me of satin. They also have a long, purple 12” prehensile tongue used primarily for feeding, but also grooming.
And the calves are SO FKN CUTE 😍
