Description Katana reference. Sword held flat to the side as though finishing a horizontal chest high cut.

It's interesting in this angle to see how the mune (back of the sword) looks almost bent a third of the way up while the ha (cutting edge) continues it's curved line.

I never thought about the slight angularity in the mune before, but here's a possible (and simple) explanation. In the cooling process, since the use of clay on the back of the blade causes the ha and mune to cool at different temperatures, the edge cools rapidly and creates the distinctive sori. In the formation of the sori the back is more...compressed, to allow for the expansion of the ha, which might explain why the mune looks more 'pinched' and the ha looks smoother and more continuous. (Of course this only applies to forged swords) My two cents.

Yes, the curve of the sword is more pronounced in the lower section of the blade but normally it's not that noticeable. It's been interesting to see these photos and seeing detail I don't normally get to see. If I had drawn the sword like that, I'm sure people would say it was wrong! XD

Thank you Before I had my katana I would struggle to find any good references that wasn't either the sword from the side or the odd unrealistic pose. So that's what's prompted me to create this collection, with lots of different cuts and angles etc. Just got the let artists know it's here to look at ^^

Very cool! I know what you mean. Some time ago I started a samurai manga and it didn't come out well, because it's really hard to find good references therefore, like the katana or the building style of that time.
Did you learn to use the katana? Kendo or something? I would really love to learn something like this, but I hesitated so far. :S
And if it is okay with you, I would like to put a feature with one of your refs on my page. Am I allowed?
So far there is not that much traffic there, but maybe some time soon. C:

Have a nice sunday!

If you do pick up your manga again, I'd love to see it! I can image finding the building references is a hard one though. I'm actually working on a joke samurai comic myself with the person who took the photos so i'm hoping these will come in handy ^^

I've been practising Iaido for the past 3- 4 years. I find it does me a lot of good to get out of the mind and just focus on precise physical movements

I would be delighted if you featured the collection. This gallery is still quite new so not many know about it. I think i'm about half way through the photos so there still plenty more katana reference pictures to come

So far the manga is on hiatus - for some years now. lol. But maybe I am gonna do a remake of it after finishing my current project. At least your pictures and another great Samurai manga (Vagabond) inspired me to think about it! We will see.

I am looking forward to your photo comic, too! Sounds like a very nice idea!
If I should start studying in Berlin very soon, I am gonna have a look in the dojo there. Maybe it's something I could do, while studying! At least I would love to see them training for once.

Thank you for so much positive input today!

No worries! Thank you very much for the feature

Yeah, making a comic is a lot of work. It's really hard to keep up the motivation on it when there's other things going on in life and not much encouragement coming in ^^
