Description Okay, this is one of my best attempts at trying to learn to work with my manual settings in my camera. It took me about 15 tries to get this very shot. Messing with aperture, F settings, focus, the whole shabang as it were. It's not like I haven't ever tried this before, but results in the past have hampered my confidence and patience.

Then on one of my walks down the neighborhood, I noticed some flowers in bloom. I tried my mode settings on these guys, but dang it, they were overexposed from the bright sun. So, deciding that I could do better than just say "eh, maybe next time" like I usually do, I switched my settings to "manual".

Through the tricky weather (i.e. clouds, slight drizzle, and breeze) and no tripod, I must have made the people in the neighborhood wonder what the hell I was doing there in front of a bush for 15-20 minutes. LOL.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. Please comments appreciated for this one. Tell me what you think!

Title from the same song by Ani DiFranco.

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

In this macro floral shot, you can see high contrast & focus on the far left flower and a gradual loss of focus as you look right. I like that. It makes the image pop, come up of the paper, people may say.

And as the focus faids you get a little brighter. It's like two gradiants for the price of one. This adds to the poping that I'm talking about.

The colors are all pastel-ly. I'm not a fan of them, but at least there's a scheme.

The vision gets a 4.5 from me.

The still isn't very original, but how could it be? Floral macro is done on many flowers in several ways.

The technique displayed in most of this artist's work is of an outstanding quality. This one is no different.

The impact of any one piece on the comunity is never much but always something. And I believe that this one helps us to keep the bar a bit higher, just where it should be.

I am truly honored by your response. Thank you so much for your honesty on this piece.

I agree it isn't original. All you have to do is search for "flower" in the search bar to get thousands of results.

But out of all of those, I'm glad you took the time to appreciate mine. Thank you again.

Well, I wouldn't say "mastered", but I think I'm getting there.

I think this is a great shot . I love the colours.. I also feel that the depth of the focus is nice.. It's not so deep that it hurts your eyes, but it keeps the piece interesting. I also like the dark green background contrasting with the pink and white .
I'm not a photographer by any means, so I'm afraid I can't help too much with the technical stuff... But anyway, haha I like this piece

While it is not perfectly focused (even on the area of focus) because of no tripod, wind, etc... It still holds enough detail to keep you grounded. But the lack of detail adds a kind of dreamy depth which I've tried to aim for in most my pictures over the years.

Thanks so much for commenting. You don't have to be a photographer to comment on a photo you like. Just knowing someone out there appreciates them is nice to know.

Nice shot.

Is it these hard, waxy kind of flowers?

The focus on the flower in front of the pic could have been just a bit sharper - but without a tripod it's difficult to get the focus precise and field of depth right.

Those are Viburnum: [link] I've noticed they are a pretty popular ornamental shrub around here in the pacific northwest. Perfect conditions.

The focus could have been better, yes, but I would of needed a tripod. I don't have one, and don't want to carry it everywhere. I'm more of a spontaneous photographer, and they just weigh me down. Not that I'm saying they are a bad thing to have, I just prefer not to.
