Description BEHOLD THE PHILIPS CD-I! IT’S got Mario! Zelda! Movies on CD! Uh… interactive encyclopedias! What could go wrong? Apparently, everything.

And before anyone ask YES I have Hotel Mario and All Three Zelda games for the CD-i and I got them and other CD-i games dirt cheap and THE WIZ electronic store in NYC. Nobody Beats the Wiz!

In 1991, the first Philips CD-i machine aimed at consumers hit the shelves. Unlike the gaming-focused consoles that Nintendo and Sega were marketing, the Philips CD-i positioned itself as the first all-around home multimedia platform. ... They used them to create some of the worst games in video game history.

The Philips CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive) is an interactive multimedia CD player developed and marketed by Royal Philips Electronics N.V. This category of device was created to provide more functionality than an audio CD player or game console, but at a lower price than a personal computer with a CD-ROM drive at the time. The cost savings were due to the lack of a hard drive, floppy drive, keyboard, mouse, monitor (a standard television was used), and less operating system software.

The CD-i player 400 series, which includes the 450, 470, 490 models. The 400 models are slimmed-down units aimed at console and educational markets (Image of the slim down console shown above). The CD-i 450 player, for instance, is a budget model designed to compete with game consoles. In this version, an infrared remote controller is not standard but we do have one.

Again the console in the photo is not the first CD-i model unit that came out in 91 but as you seen them before they are about the size of now bigger then a stander VCR player and it's too large to fit in the photo so I took the photo of the smaller console size model that came with a controller pad then a small remote controller.

At launch the was a total of 8 CD-i media disk 7 in long box plastic case and one in regular title Pac-Panic.  The first time playing the unit was on a demo floor at the electron section at SEARS and this THING was going for $699.95 and was playing Dark Castle. The 1991 launch games were

  • Battleship

  • Beauty and the Beast

  • Caesar's World of Boxing

  • Connect Four

  • Dark Castle

  • Defender of the Crown

  • Pac-Panic

  • Sargon Chess

The system all true warriors strive for! But seriously, the tv remote controller this console had was awful.

I had one, back then sprite based graphics pasted over CG video was very cool! The days of the 3-DO and Panasonic Laser Active. I had an FM Townes Marty 2 with the coolest game called Scavenger Four/ Later watered down and called Nova Storm. Lol.... Now we will see the Next XBOX and PS!!!

Shame Nintendo didn’t go with Sony with CD add-on. We could have had a CD based games on the SNES and possible CD based N64.

If Nintendo did go with with Sony. Sony would have most if not all profits CD-ROM and ownership of the system through a poorly worded contract.
