I didn't like Sonic and the Secret rings for the broken gameplay, but I loved how they fixed that in this game.

With difficulty.

XD I just followed a game reference very carefully, and then spent quite a while using different shades of the colours (again, taken from the reference directly) and layering the colours. To get them to look semi-blended I just used the thinnest pencil tool and scribbled over the joins so that they weren't so abrubt.
