You made the picture look even better. You are amazing for working from such a small pic.

This one was HARD to draw, and it's not one of my better ones, but there was nothing I could do. When I get refs that tiny, I just cannot see details I need to see to draw better, so I had to make it look more like a sketch than a drawing, but the sister loved it. It was for a brother & sister in her hall having an anniversary and it was an emergency rush (naturally) but apparently she was thrilled when she got the package, so that's all that matters to me. If the client is happy, I'm happy.

I thought it was excellent, and then I saw how fast you did it...amazing!!!
Just recently decided to try gridding for the first time on my next drawing. What's your reason for not?

Awww. Thank you for your kind words. I've used a grid in the past just to see if I could and if it helped, and for my way of doing things, it didn't really help me much. Basically, I don't use a grid because it just takes too long to grid everything out when I can just whip it out by hand pretty quick.

Well, I could understand it if I had your talent. I am much more methodical at this stage. I just consistantly see little perportion issues after I'm well into my drawings. It's getting madning! Thought I'd give it a try anyway. I think because I have no formal training or education in art, strictly self-taught, this discipline may be beneficial for me. I welcome any constructive comments, I am relatively new to drawing and am in the learning phase - I am a sponge (like square pants!)!

Awww thanks, B what a nice thing to say!! You're very talented, tho, you keep it up and do whatever you need to do to get your proportions correct. If you dont mind a suggestion; start with the skeleton. Get some very basic ideas down of our inner workings. It really helps when you start adding muscles and clothes, suddenly those pesky proportions are just right! I'm strictly self taught, too, when it comes to fine art; my college teaching was for commercial art and graphic & web design. I've got some great tutorials that helped me, here, let me note them for you; go over them and see if any of them feel encouraging to you:

and here's a bunch of them: [link]
Do a search here at DA and on Google [link] and type in any kind of tutorial; drawing hands or how to draw hands, for example, and you'll get lots of great ideas of how to improve your skills! But most of all... practice practice practice. You've got the talent; for someone just starting you're already amazing so I know you're gonna do great!

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to give me this info!! I have done google searches and that's very helpful. In most cases I just need to have the discipline to "practice" - I tend to just launch into my next drawing and not do "drills" to build basic skills. I see why you were a featured deviant! Get this, my degree was in Economics - great prep for drawing!! Drawing is just a hobby, but I really do want to get as good as possible. Thanks again!

Thank you so much! Yeah, I moved her down to be by him and made her face bigger to match the new position. I'm always moving people closer together, or flipping them (I like to draw women to the right of the men, just looks more balanced) or putting different, easier to draw clothes on them, stuff like that *grin* Try it, you'll like it
