Aw, come on. It's hollywood; it's just cute that they're trying.

Ecxept for the resulting material fetishizing these characters... Oh dear gods WHY?!

AThousandRasps In reply to Tanabru [2012-05-30 05:20:48 +0000 UTC]

Not cute, only terrible

The fetishizing is pretty awkward too. But I've been a little desensitized to weird stuff. If you gaze into the Internet, the Internet gazes also into you.

I guess the way I thik of it is just to keep in mind that it's NOT norse mythology; it's a story inspired by norse mythology, and I tend to like those.

The worst thing - even worse than the perverse internetisms - is that my friend who's in high school said that they were watching this movie in history class... To learn about norse mythology... Children are literally being taught that this IS norse mythology... And that makes me die a little inside.

The old stories are actually pretty clear about Thor, which is surprising. Big, huge-bearded, red-haired, pretty dumb, loves food!

Thorskegga In reply to AThousandRasps [2012-05-30 10:48:20 +0000 UTC]

I challenge you to find any old story that says he is dumb

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AThousandRasps In reply to Thorskegga [2012-05-30 13:49:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, I am certainly exaggerating a bit! It seemed more implied to me, like in stories where he's in the "cave" and doesn't figure out it's a house, or where Odin-in-disguise teases circles around him and won't let him cross the river.

Poor Thor

I assume you mean the glove in the Utgardaloki story, that is often given as evidence as Thor is repeated fooled by magic, but so is Loki, and few would call Loki dim (lots of other things but not dim).

The Lay of Harbard is very strange. It seems to be an attack by the followers of Odin on the followers of Thor. And as such does not show the god as his worshippers would have seen him. Ironically it highlights many of traits that make Thor so popular, his close links with the common people and his desire for peace and stability on Earth. The opposite scenario occurs in the story of Starkard where Thor wins a magical debate with Odin and curses Odin's favourite into (among other things) being hated by the common people.

Its worth remembering that the Icelanders considered Thor the patron of legal debates.

Marvel's Thor would last five minutes

You're definitely right about the Utgard-Loki story! Everyone is fooled, not just Thor. I also didn't know that much detail about the Lay of Harbard, and I'd never heard of the Starkard story. I also didn't know that about the legal debates--both those stories are really fascinating! Stupid is definitely me exaggerating--"down to earth" is definitely more accurate, like you say. I imagine him getting flustered during debate... maybe not because he's dim, but because he just doesn't have much patience for it? But now I'm just wandering into the wide, wide world of interpretation

Thanks for the info! You know a lot!

I have read a little

Thor is renowned for openess and honesty, in great contrast to the deceipt employed by Odin, Loki and even Thialfi. Its more a divine function than a measure of intelligence. Thors worshippers want peace and good harvests, Odin's warriors want chaos and opportunity.

There are two exceptions where Thor behaves far more like Loki, the story of Alvis the dwarf where Thor spends half a night discussing poetic terminology to trick a dwarf, and Eaglebeak a folk tale from the Sagas.

Eaglebeak is not well known - you can read my version here:

I have switched the hero to Loki as the tale suits him so much better. But the orginal has Thor playing cunning weasel.

The section from Eaglebeaks prayer offering a goat through to the curse on her child are very close to the original story.
