Description

A continuation of Tobias's story.  This takes place a few hours later near the middle of the day.  Kendra Greyshield is the owner of two slaves, Tobias and Kura.  She is also the Granddaughter of HM Empress Edelinne the Second, the current ruler of Charbytesia and is currently fourth inline behind her brother (2nd) and her newborn niece (3rd).  Her work as a Senior Instructress and researcher at the Herdulum Royal Magical University take up most of her time.

Kendra took a deep breath as she looked out the window of her office.  Even on the Sixth day she preferred to have her lunch in her office.  On class days she viewed her office as a small refuge amongst the bustle of the University.  Aside from her apartment it was one of the few places on campus where she could relax and let her guard down.  Here she wasn’t a princess, fourth in line for the Charbytesian throne or a Senior Instructress.  Here she could just be Kendra.

“The sun is almost at its meridian height” she said to herself as her gaze shifted from the courtyard outside her office to the blazing star in the sky.  “Truly the glory and beauty of the day.”  She mused remembering an old Noble Elf proverb.

The morning had been a bustle of activity.  Her mind goes back to the conversation she had with Tobias when she brought her morning tea.  He seemed quite flustered when he told her that his season had started.  Kendra gave a small smirk, she had to admit that Tobias was quite cute when he was flustered.  Of course she understood his embarrassment, though the mating habits of the vulpine always struck her as odd.  Unlike elves who could get pregnant at any time the vulpine are only able to do so for a few weeks during the month of SpringTide.  The females of the species emit a musk that has an ‘interesting’ effect on the males.

Kendra knew it was hard for Tobias to confide this in her.  This was very personal for him and of course she would gladly ‘help’ him through these next few weeks. A small blush started to work its way through her cheeks.  Oh yes, she would provide any ‘help’ that he would need.

She gave a gentle shake to her head and a gentle chuckle escaped her lips.  Kendra gave out a sigh then moved away from the window.   She and Kura had spent a better portion of the morning at the University’s salon getting various treatments, a manicure, pedicures (she could still hear Kura grumbling) in preparation for tonight’s formal night.  It was tradition at the University to hold a formal reception and dinner on Sixth day.  There would be socializing, a grand dinner, and a guest lecturer from Tretonver.  It was billed as capstone of the week and promised to be a wondrous event.

Since her father, HRH Prince of Yeowland Colinus (heir apparent to the Charbytesian Empire) is the Patron of the University, she would be serving as his representative.  Which meant that she would have to wear her Princesses Tiara and be addressed formally.  She would be seated at the head table, next to the Arch Magister and many other dignitaries.  There would be a lot of pleasantries, people bowing and curtsying, small talk, and Kendra would hate every minute of it.

The evening always brought up memories of what seemed like another life for her.  When she was young and an active member of the Royal Family.  It also brought up memories of him, the man she was in love with and was expecting to marry.  That was until that fateful day in the University’s laboratory that changed everything.  The accident that occurred had left Kendra severely injured.  While most of her wounds had healed she was left barren, being unable to bear children.  That was the worst of it, because a Noble Elf who couldn't produce heirs wasn't a Noble Elf.

Kendra tried to push those thoughts out of her mind.  She was in a better place now, but the memories and the thoughts of what could have been still haunted her.

“Dry your tears little one and adjust your mask.  It is time to do your duty."  She said to herself.  Words her mother used to tell her when she was little.

Kendra took a deep breath and walked toward a small altar that was near the door to her office.  It was time and she only had a few more minutes by herself.  She slowly knelt down before, keeping her body erect except for her head which bowed slightly.  She crossed her arms over her chest, right over left.  Her gaze then fell on the shrine to Josselyne, The Red Goddess which sat at the center of the altar.

“Supreme Architect of the Universe, I, your humble servant, give thanks.  I walk the path that you have laid down for me on your trestle-board.” Kendra said quietly.  “While the journey has not been without its … challenges.”  She pauses for a moment, then continues.  “I know that you will watch over and protect me.  From you the laws and rules that govern this plane exist.  By the rough stone, I am reminded of my rude and natural state.  By the perfect stone, that state that I aspire to be.  Grant me wisdom and courage on this day.  In your name I pray.”

She offers the shrine of Josselyne a small bow which she holds for several moments. Kendra then ends her bow but keeps her vision fixed on the altar.  Her attention now turns to two figurines, one on either side of the shrine.

“Ballatulla and Cairistìona, Mother of Beasts and the Great Mother.” Kendra says as her eyes shift between the two figurines.  “I wish to thank you for sending me your humble servants.” A small smirk crosses her face.  “Even though they can be a handful at times.  I ask that you watch over and protect them while they attend to their duties.  Keep them safe from harm and if they offend me may my anger subside quickly.  If it were not for them I fear that I may be lost.  In the Goddess's name I pray.”

She gives each figurine a small bow and then slowly rises to her feet, keeping her arms crossed on her chest.  Kendra bows once more to the altar then slowly takes two steps back.  After taking a deep breath she turns and walks back to her desk and sits down.

‘Tobias and Kura should be back soon.’  She thought to herself as she started thumbing through some class notes.  She sent the pair to pick up lunch, Tobias, to the Faculty Hall to get Kendra’s meal while Kura repaired to the Slaves and Servants Hall to get her and Tobias’s lunch.  Once they returned Kendra would eat her meal at her desk while Tobias and Kura sat on the floor and ate.

After their noon day meal, Kendra would give Tobias and Kura their weekly allowance.  15 talents of silver each.  The three would then leave the University and travel to the city markets.  There Tobias and Kura would have an hour to wander the various stalls.  The only rule being that they had to present what they've purchased to her.  There were two reasons for this, first that they did not purchase any contraband (weapons, forbidden books, alcohol, etc…) and second, to make sure they spent the money on themselves.  Kendra hated when Tobias and Kura spent their money on items that she should be providing to them.  This rule was implemented after Tobias purchased a beautiful set of hair cutting tools.  The tools were not for cutting Tobias’s hair but for cutting her hair.  This upset her as if Tobias needed new tools she should have asked her.  Of course she let him keep the tools, but she made sure to pay him back.

When they were done with the market, they would hand her any unspent silver or copper back.  This Kendra would keep it in a safe place for them.  This allowed them to accrue a small amount of savings that they could use for future trips to the market.  For the past few weeks Kendra has actually increased their allowance to 45 talents of silver each.  15 talents for them to spend or save as they see fit, and 30 talents that she kept in a separate safe for them.  She has not told Tobias or Kura about the extra savings, but they might need it in the future.

At that moment Kendra heard a knock on her office door.  A voice of a young woman came from the other side of the door.  “Meestress, may we cahme een?  Tahbias ahnd I hahve returned weeth lunch.”

‘Ah they have returned.’  Kendra said to herself.  She closed her eyes for a moment, sat up more straight and stiffened her expression.  Now she was no longer just Kendra.  She was now Mistress Kendra and had to act accordingly.

“You have permission to enter.”
