You know, I agree with Jim, you should take pictures of girls that arent perfect 10's

I know that sort of thing doesnt sell, but then Mapplethorpe comes to mind. I saw a book of his portraits of women, and thought to myself, ok, damn the controversy, I'll take a peek at his other books. So I opened the next one I saw, and wouldnt you know, it was the dark, darkest Hell of gay sex, and that was it for me. Thinking about it now makes me uncomfortable, edgy, and near violent. I thank God I'm not gay, but I digress.

Point being: If Maplethorpe sells that stuff, surely there are some "average" women you can make into works of art.

Other than that, I like how her pink bits stay pink under all that blue. This is very "lounge" very Vega$. Suddenly I remember where I've seen girls like that before...

Got change for a $20? :dollar:

I know in my experience, there was only one girl that was genuinely skinny. Most women dont look like your models.

OK, first of all, Thanx for the comment and a sincere critic, that is very important for me

About the girls... Ill copy here a Jocke someone else left in other deviation of mine A photographer was invited to dinner at the friend of a friend's house. During the course of conversation after dinner the photographer's profession was brought up. He happened to have a sample portfolio in his car and he got it and allowed the hostess to look at it. She said "You have some lovely pictures. You must have a really good camera." He sat there in silence for a moment or two and then replied "Thank you. The dinner was great too. You must have some really good pots."

OK, here is the same thing in a way... its not about the cameras, or the models, or how expensive the lights are. Here I used a Nikon 990 Coolpix camera, its not a pro camera, a black backdrop that is just a fabric, and fluorescent light that you can buy in any store at a very cheap price, but now, the equipment is not the matter... the model is the problem...

Well, in fact, i do prefer to choose models with a good body because its my intention to show Beauty, the artist choice... my choice. If I wanted to show another kind of beauty I would have choosen another type of model, like Mapplethorphe for example, or Jan Saudek. But it was not my choice, because i wanted to show the beauty of a nude body, with a non erotic shot (that's why I hate that in DA there is not a Nude Section).

In the other hand, some of the shots i made with this light, are not with " perfect body models", you should see other takes of the same shooting, but there are some tricks to make a model look better than she/he is, and that's another thing a photographer must know, I mean, its not only about having a beautiful subject, its about choosing the perfect angle, pose, moment, light, etc.

Finally, ~elphabastevens told me the same about making beautiful shots with beautiful subjects, and challenged me to make a beautiful shot with a non beauty subject, then I choose a Hygienic Paper to make the shots, and she loved them... so I think I probe my statement with that.

About girls looking as skinny as my models, I may ask, Have you gone to the beach lately? I dont know where you are, but there are a lot of womans around that looks "skinny", as there are not skinny (say "normal" and fat persons too.. the diversity is amazing (and wonderful).

But, after all, again, I think its a matter of what the artist wants to say... I mean, you wouldnt ask Van Gough why did he choose Sunflowers instead of Violets... (Im not saying I am like Van Gough, I wish I could!)

Thanx for taking the time to coment and make a good critic again, i really apreciate it

its all good man

I dont necessarily include all a woman's warts in my pictures

I'm about 4 hours away from a beach, but this is Texas, and there are a lot of "plus" sized women about

You know, EVERY thing is bigger in Texas, including our girls

Something this good deserves medium format film.

Thanx for the compliment

Why a Coolpix? well, it was a matter of money (i dont have money for a better digital camera), and that i havent a medium format camera at that time (now i own a Mamiya 645), next shots i will do will be with my mamiya. I made some of the shots in a Nikon 35 mm camera too, but in B/W, but i liked a lot more the color ones with the digital (shame about the resolution, I know...)

I wish I had known you back then. Good as you are I'd have GIVEN you a medium format of some kind, though I prefer the older models - mechanical with fully manual controls.

atila In reply to FallisPhoto [2004-01-07 02:03:24 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, thanx man! About the camera i have, the Mamiya I bought is an old one, the model is 645 S, its full manual, and it doesnt even have a photometer included (but i got a Minolta IV photometer, so it doesnt matter, i dont think Im gonna change de prism then), I have hardly tested it, as I bought it about 5 mounth ago, and Im still not working much here... but I hope i can get another lens soon, as I only have the 80 mm that cames with it. Its a great camera, the only thing I would have prefered is the other model, that you can use different backs, specially about the polaroid back, in this model it's not possible, but still its a wonderful camera, I just love it! I think it will be my camera at least until I get a bigger one

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FallisPhoto In reply to atila [2004-01-11 22:44:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Mamiya's are good. I prefer that old fashioned "classic" look I get with my old cameras and a silver-rich single emulsion film (switched from Agfa APX to Efke). I used to have a Pentax MF SLR, but I actually prefer the images I get with my Voigtlander Avus view camera (an old medium format plate camera modified for film). It is great to have the tilt and shift features. I collect cameras so I have quite a few. I have a Voigtlander Bessa II, a Yashica Model 124, a Yashica model A, a Cirolfex, a Rolleiflex, an Agfa Isoletter V, an Agfa Isolette III and a bunch of Kodaks and box cameras. Of those, the Isolette III, the Voigtlander, the Rolleiflex and the Yashicas take wonderful photos.

Wow, you really have a lot of cameras, I got a YAshica (Mat-124 G is teh model) and I love it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FallisPhoto In reply to atila [2004-01-15 21:56:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Yashicas are great! They made several VERY good cameras. Some of their 35mm rangefinder cameras beat Leicas in testing and their Yashica mat 124s and 124 Gs put Rolleiflex's TLRs out of production for a long time.

I've tried my Yashica Mat against my Rolleiflex and I can't tell much difference except at the widest aperture setting. I don't have any Leicas to test my rangefinders against, but I do have half a dozen Yashica rangefinders and I'd have to say that their Lynx 14, GTN and their GSN are the best 35mm cameras I have ever tried (they even beat my Canon and Pentax SLRs). The rangefinders are bright and very accurate, the autoexposure (in the GT and GSN) is dead on at all settings, autoexposure will work without a hitch with up to 30 second exposures, and the lenses are bright and extremely good. You ought to try one of the Lynx 14s (A model with no autoexposure) sometime when you are in the mood to do 35mm photos. The kind of photography you are doing is what they are best at.

I wish I had done this, although I think I would have done it in B&W. I am jealous. Was the pose your idea or the model's? BTW, I like your attitude. Anyone mentioning "dirty pictures" in my studio is asked politely but firmly to leave. I figure my work is wasted on them, their comments annoy anyone else who walks in, I don't think my models would like these peole looking at them & it is a waste of time to try to explain nude art to someone who stopped developing emotionally when he or she was 12 years old.

hmm... well, first off this is a very well done shot. the lighting is excellent and surreal, and in all the right places.

but, this is a photo of an already attractive object. just like it is not difficult to take a good picture of an amazing sunset, the female form you have chosen is already attractive in her own right.

now im not saying this apples to this photo in particular, as it is extremely well done, but when it comes to nudes it seems that the model is always what society would deem as "attractive". i think it would be a very interesting study to try and get a shot of someone who was not "attractive", and yet have the photo turn out as well as this.

just took a peek thru your gallery to check, and from what ive seen every person would be considered 'attractive'. (though theres some very good stuff in there that ive commented on before)

ive always thought this way about nudes, just never really voiced it until now. maybe i see talent and hope you can give it a shot, or maybe im just crazy, who knows.

one last thing, there is a jpeg artifact blob on the right edge of the photo, to the right of her hair; as if this wasent long enough.

In viewing your work as a whole I get the feeling you try to take any emotion or warmth from the subject.. perhaps to keep them from ever coming near tackiness or, as you put it, having a 'porn' esque effect. Their nakedness, as a result, appears all the more stark and yet they seem less vulnerable. This particular one somewhat reminds me of Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy, as the woman appears to be just an adornment.. her body seems unsubjugated almost, as though all can see her but none will ever touch.. a permanent statue in her nudity. Quite lovely. Quite touching.
