Species: G. blacki, G. bilaspurensis, G. giganteus

German paleontologist Ralph von Koenigwald first described Gigantopithecus remains in the form of a set of teeth found in a Hong Kong apothecary shop in the 1930's, and the early collection of Gigantopithecus remains took place in such shops throughout China. Eventually the source was traced to a cave in Guangxi in souther China, which has since yielded several teeth and jaws.

Although it was probably quadrupedal like a gorilla, it still calls to mind the famous giant ape.
